While messaging with other coin roll hunters a common theme has emerged; banks are charging fees to order coin. I have felt lucky for a while now because my bank never charged me a fee and the tellers always seemed happy to order as many boxes of coins as I could possibly handle.

Well, that changed today. It seems that for the past couple of months some other dude, who the tellers dubbed 'the coin guy' has been placing extreme orders. Where I, at the most in one trip, will order ten boxes (and to not press my luck I usually keep it to a maximium of 2 or 3 at a time) of nickels this mystery hombre orders 20 to 30 boxes in one fell swoop!

And here's the kicker; not only are they frustrated that he orders such large amounts but he is breaking the Golden Rule of coin roll searching. The Cardinal Sin. The First Commandment, if you will. He dumps them AT THE SAME BANK! Frequently.

Needless to say, they are not happy. Well, since searching for silver has increased so much over the past few years this other guy is obviously not the only one ordering boxes of coin. But he is most definitely the straw that broke the teller's back. So today, when I picked up my ONE box of nickels, I was informed that they would no longer be ordering coin for non-business account customers. Not even for a fee.

Since I'm so friendly with the tellers (and I don't, how do I say this...doodoo where I eat) she offered to place one more order for me that will be coming in next week.

So to you, coin guy, I say "Thank you." Thanks for not thinking about what you were doing and the affect it would have on others. You have permanently fouled-up my 'lil operation. My gold mine.

And as I highly doubt you are on this forum ('cause if you were common sense would dictate that you had a 'dump bank') I don't mind mentioning that I will now have to open an account at a smaller local bank that shall remain nameless (just in case you are reading this). I'll just make sure this time that 'the coin guy' isn't on the customer list.

Thanks for reading my rant.

That's unfortunate. Sorry bout that.

But there's always that one guy in every crowd, like for the teenager that ruined my experience because most people think that teenagers now a days are all hoodlums.

Rest in Peace

It's even getting hard to get a few rolls. I've really limited my requests at small CUs and Bank branches. Usually, they can always give you a few rolls. It's even hard to use the laundramat excuse since most have gone to a type of cash card. I definitely have to do a lot more driving to roll search. I've also had to kick my "role playing" up a notch or two to keep the tellers smiling when I ask.

If its a male teller then youre having a poker games with your mates. If its a female teller youre collecting them for your wifes poker game. Works well for me.

This is becoming common everywhere. More and more banks are starting to charge for anything dealing with bulk coinage. This is due to several reasons and what you mentioned is only one of them. People are getting rolls, opening them, taking out what they want and then closing the rolls with one or two short. Some are replacing coins with washers in the rolls. Many are just bringing in bags of those coins and more and more coin counters are just breaking down.
By me most banks will take your coins and send out for counting. This will cost people for that service. And if you do not have an account, they will send you a check for the amount minus a charge for that also. And they will not tell you how many coins are rejected, what they were, nor will you get those back. You have no way of knowing if their count was accurate and even if you do know they cheated you, you can't prove that. And many banks are starting to charge just to give you bulk coins.
This is all due to this latest craze of getting bulk coins from a bank and just returning them again.

Whether it's 1 box or 1000, it's not their job. You've been abusing the system for quite some time and got away with it, you should be glad for the time you had not mad they finally got fed up.

Scubu,

You are right in the sense that they don't HAVE to order coin for customers. It was a privilege that I appreciated and enjoyed. The point is that I didn't ABUSE it, hence I would order smaller amounts and not dump 'em at the same bank. And as I said, the tellers never cared nor did the bank manager.

I never forced them to make the orders, just the opposite; most of the time they would ask if I wanted to have some delivered. So whether or not it was 'their job,' they did it just the same until someone else abused it. This is a lesson to those that abuse a privilege.

Awesome idea.

"You would like to order more coins you said?. Give me a second to count and package the lot you just returned. No?, well then buh-buy!"

I'm the only one in my family (besides my grandpa), at my work and among my friends who collects coins so I appreciate having folks here that understand the frustrations.

BiggFredd, I wish you worked at my bank! lol
