Again, I have a chance to buy this coin, but I would like to have everyone's opinion on it's authenticity. I appreciate the help.

I remember very well giano. I've mentioned this before, but it was Marcus Antonius that got me interested in Roman history, and my first Roman coin was a legionary denarius of his. I am thinking very hard on buying this coin if everyone here agrees it is authentic. Thanks giano, I will let you know if I buy.

I don't really have anything of substance to add, but I'm a little put off by the pictures. I guess whenever I see coins partially in focus, I give the coin more scrutiny. My eyes almost see raised lumps in the fields--is that anything to be concerned about?

Wish I could help but I haven't seen many of these to say for sure.

surely is an expensive coin,in fact I take the suberate without a piece hoping to be able to restore something because a similar piece in good condition was too expensive...and I have spent a lot for the julius caesar denarius with elephant,I think it's a coin comparable to it as importance... And if I remember well one of your sons' name is marcus antonius:-)

You have a good memory giano. My youngest son is named Marcus Antonius. They say there is a lot in a name and I believe that. My youngest son is fiercely loyal to a fault as I believe the original Marcus Antonius was to to JC (at least that is how history portrays him). I should have named my oldest son Augustus for his attributes. Instead we named him Vinny after my gangster uncle. Hmmmmmm

Something just wasn't right--so I did some searching. I have cobbled together the example above with one taken from the FAC reports Despite the toning and simulated wear, there are too many similarities to be coincidental--imo. But perhaps you've discovered that already?

Thanks DVC. I think you are right so I am leaving this one alone. As much as I want one I don't want a fake!

yes I think dvcollector is right, however in this case it's a really well done fake, and jw's pics show that the coin has been further trated to give a certain amount of wear. Unfortunately, the missing piece to the reverse in the exact same point leaves little doubt. I'd fallen for this coin, is very well done.

Quote: Unfortunately, the missing piece to the reverse in the exact same point leaves little doubt. Giano, you're right--that omission is in just the right place--coincidence? Still, there's a little of that crease below the bust visible on both.
