Royal Canadian Mint @CanadianMint
@CanadianMint announces Canada's 1st Augmented Reality (AR) coin at a function with @GaryTaxali + #MattBarnes at the @agotoronto tonite!

Just saw this on the Twitter from the Canadian Mint. Any ideas as to what an "Augmented Reality" coin is? I don't know about you guys, but I think regular coins are real enough. I smell another gimmick coin coming...

It's probably a coin with a design, insignia or QR code on it that works with an iPhone or webcam to add to a video feed.

I think it would be a neat thing if you had a program on your iPhone that counts your spare change on sight, or picks out key dates by photo recognition. :-)

Ayup. See the third image on the right (AR Tower Defense). "Fiduciary markers" is exactly the phrase I was looking for.

Their coin probably has a mark on the design that allows you to interact with some sort of video-based system on your computer or smart phone.

The Mint's facebook post provides more details:

The Royal Canadian Mint is looking forward to a demonstration of Canada's first Augmented Reality (AR) coin tonight as we host a function in honour of Gary Taxali and Matt Barnes at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. AR experts Helen Papagiannis and interactive media company Daqri will show how a smart phone can scan actual coins to reveal the story behind their creation and information on artist Gary Taxali.

There's already an app that can read the denomination of US bills it's scanned over.

It would be cool if they worked with Nintendo and their 3DS. An AR coin for general circulation would solve a lot of security issues.
