Long waited dragon coins came out with a surprise of the mintage that made the RCM collectors very disappointed. I could understand the dragon has made a lot of profit for RCM and might do the same this time too. The point is how to do it in a right way: Like the way how Perth Mint did. I could imagine the dragon coin's market target was mainly Chinese and RCM might receive large number of the orders from the Chinese vendors. Those vendors must have approached to the Perth Mint too, but why Perth Mint didn't increase their mintage? Oh, they did, but not yet. The way they played is to keep the same mintage of their first round coin types (Sept Release), Make a shortage of their dragon coins. Then they will have every reason to raise the mintage in their next round (Oct release). Wait a minute, even if they raise the mintage, the number is probably not as many as RCM. RCM could still be a profit winner. No, Perth Mint has special release for Chinese market. That release's mintage beats RCM's. Chinese is happy they get the dragon. PM collectors are happy their collection is protected. PM is happy not only they make the money, but more new collectors are joining because they learn that PM's coins will make money for them. RCM marketing planners, I know this sounds complicated to you, but you could at least do a special release for those extra mintages and keep the existing series untouched. Now you are sacrificing your long-time loyal collectors just because of the one-time buyers. Maybe not one-time, once every twelve years. jd *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Please do not leave your email address in posts - it is an open invitation to spam. Despite the increased mintage, I still bought the classic lunar dragon because I like the design. But please RCM, don't do that again especially for a series/set. Stick with the 9999 mintage for each animal. Dragons are indeed extremely popular, most of them will be bought up by people of ethnic Chinese background.

I agree. The increase demand for Dragons could have been met through all these other Dragon coins this year. There was no reason to increase the mintage on a set when there are alternative means.....
All the Dragons look nice though.

Quote: Your thoughts have been passed along to our product marketing team. We appreciate your honest thoughts With all do respect... You make it sound like the mint was surprised to hear that we the collectors are disappointed with these higher mintage's.You must of know this would happen. I Collect because I like the Art form...aftermarket value is not why I buy....But it's nice to know that when I pass my collection on to my son..It will be worth something more than I paid.... I have the Perth 1oz Dragon proof,1oz colored proof, and the 2 dragon proofs from the R.C.M..... I like yours the best so far...But I like there Mintage's better..

honestly I don't think the mintage increase is a disaster, after all there will be only 9999(19999) sets in the end, maybe even less than that number in that beautiful wood box. When RCM sells these dragons in asia, make sure let them know that it belongs to a set. maybe a fly of an image with whole set in the box? I'm sure a lot of the dragon buyers will go after the set. the tigers and rabbits will be hot when this happens...now I'm thinking maybe I should buy more tiger if it's still available at $88

I woke up on the day the Perth Mint released it's silver proof dragon only to find that it had sold out before my computer could warm up. I spent over $350 on ebay just to receive it today and be disappointed, very disappointed. The Canadian Mint just can't be beat from the display box to the design. A slight increase helps prevent issues like this from happening and the bulk of the dragons went to China anyways. Bottom line is there will still only be 9999 set out there and the value and quality are still there.

Chubbycheeks, could you be more specific about why you are dissappointed with the dragons from the Perth Mint? I ordered one myself, but haven't received mine yet. Hope it's not some quality issue.

Maybe it was the price I paid that left a bad taste in my mouth. Although the coin itself is nice I really feel It didn't live up to all the excitement. The strike seems weak and the design I feel is a little plain after seeing it up close. The display case is same as the others, plastic.
Comparing that to the Canadian coin the strike is much better and more detailed. And if you didn't sign up for the subscription the single display box hands down can't be beat.
( It could just be the strike on my coin numbered 2686 )

Hot topic, this one. Compared to the Australians I would again put my money into RCM's lotus and 1oz dragons, because it's not the price, design, or even mintage figures really that got the bad reviews. It's RCM not sticking to the lower mintages of the earlier coins in the SERIES especially when many subscribed to the series under the impression that mintage or at the very least, metal composition, would be kept consistent for the whole series. Aim to make maximum profit by all means but don't step on the loyalty of current customers to do it. All this and the rather lame response that changing the lotus dragon from sterling silver to fine silver was a decision to make the coins "easier to produce"... Bleh~ (can't seem to vent enough on the topic. Carolyn would need riot gear to dive into this and the lotus dragon thread )

The Mint is really milking these Dragon's. There are now five different Dragon models, four in different price brackets. I guess it isn't a bad idea to cater to the different markets. I like the idea of the $30 silver Dragon, not everyone can afford a hundred bucks.

Between all of the dragon coins, there are now 733,978 dragons. I am probably still forgetting a design, can't keep track.

"drag-on" nice. must say though, seems like they are selling well. 2 neighboring postal stations sold out of both dragon coins, the 2 local coin shops I visited today sold 2-3 of the coins just while I was browsing.
