I was like wow, that is an old pour and Engle and all, but 18 plus grand seems a bit steep for a 10 oz. silver bar. I know the title said gold, but I was moving fast as always, and it looked silver in appearance, as often gold or silver will look like each other under the right light an camera angle.....
If you figure gold at 1800 per oz., which seems fair for Engle premiums (75 bucks oer oz. ouch and then some), then I guess 18 grand calculates right out....

Why am I not surprised TBK that you are looking at 10 oz. gold bars, as I don't even search for them, lol. no need to get myself all worked up for nothin, lol....
Go BIG or go HOME cuz, that is what I am saying, lol. Maybe one day, but I am gonna have to put my Pinky an the brain face on and get back to my conquer the world drawing board first....

I hope it's not a fake one made out of tungsten. Both metals are of the same density, you know.........!

Good call Sel, how can one defend against it, or check to see if it is tungsten?

I was thinking the same thing. I don't think I could buy a bar like this off ebay. I would have to go to a reputable bullion dealer.

Oh yeah, I would never buy a $20k bar online.

My understanding is that it's customary to strike a bar of gold with a hammer to determine if it's tungsten. Tungsten is the same density as gold (to three decimal places), but it's A LOT harder. The gold would dent, the tungsten would hit you back. I don't know if this would work with a bar of tungsten with a thick coating of gold on the outside (something like half tungsten by volume).

Ya... a lot of time also, I know with the giant 100 ounce silver bars, will have holes drilled inti them, filled with a similar metal, and resealed/melted to make them look like they were never touched.
The only reason I would buy something that large is to avoid the premium. You could get 10 1 ounce bars for cheaper, and they would be easier to resell
Cool bar though! But even if I had the money, I wouldn't buy something .Ike that

One idea I heard is put a needle in a bench drill and bring it down with the drill off. Gold should have a hole, tungsten should break it.

Haha but then you put a hole in your $18,000 gold bar for a test that doesn't necessarily prove anything :P
