Hello everyone, I am not sure how to ID this one since it is missing a lot of lettering on the obverse. But I can see "...DIAUG" on the obverse, and the mintmark appears to be "R(or H?)MV." Any help with this one would be greatly appreciated! Edited by Archraz 02/18/2012 6:59 pm

As a starting point for you, I think it's;
D N VALEN-S P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm branch.

I'm not going to be much help, but the letters you refer to on the obverse are more likely "PFAVG". The reverse legend is "Sevuritas ------". I'm guessing it is something like a Valens with a SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE, Victory advancing left holding wreath & palm branch. I can't quite make out the mintmark. If you can, there is a chance we can narrow it down some.

Gil-galad & jwharper- Thanks for the input! I do believe that the mint mark may be "R(or H?)MV." However, there also appears to be another letter after these, and it is possibly a smaller "S".

With the emperors name missing and only the PF AVG left on the obverse it's going to be a guess who it is. But based on the reverse which is SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE. I think it might be Gratian.

There may be a Valens that matches with a R dot QV in the mintmark. It is Valens RIC IX Rome 17b:
OBV: DN VALEN-S PF AVG REV: SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE
R dot QVARTA in exergue.
MAYBE?

jwharper- You may be right! The Q sort of looks a bit more like a G, but I suppose that it could just be a bit deformed, which does not seem to be that uncommon for mm letters. If this is the case, then awesome! This coin was from the same uncleaned lot as the other Valens that I posted yesterday: https://goccf.com/t/111173So it is not a bad deal to get both RIC 15b var & RIC 17b in the same small uncleaned lot. So any guesses as to the rarity and value of my coin?

When I looked this up on Hevetica's it says 17b/24b, so until I have the time to look in my RIC I can't be sure which. However, it is listed as scarce by Helvitica's.
I just looked it up and it says that "there were twelve different mintmarks known, some of which were used for the later, identical issue 24b."
I have no guess as to value though. Sorry

Nice find again! I am starting to wish I had happened across this lot That is soo cool to find this type of mintmark there twice, let alone once. Maybe there are even more! At this rate you will complee this mintmark type set before I do. Keep us updated on your finds

jwharper & ancientcoinguy- Thanks for the help!
ancientcoinguy- Might you have a guess as to the value of this one? It does look better and a bit clearer in hand, despite the little bit of verdigris near the emperor's forehead.

I'd say around $6-$8 for it.

Normally I would agree with the prices mentioned above by VK and Gil, but since I am 'in the hunt' for these coins I would personally pay anywhere from $10-$13 for this. These prices we are throwing out on this one may seem low, but that is just because this one is pretty far off the flan in areas. Still, I love it!
Normally I find it almost impossible to find coins minted in the city of Rome in uncleaned lots. I think this is mostly because the uncleaned lots available were found in Bulgaria, Syria, Turkey, and the surrounding region. You get lots of mint marks from that area, but very few if any from the western cities. This lot was either found near Rome or the person who buried it 1700 years ago had recently returned home from a trip to the city and brought these coins back with him/her.

Thanks for the pricing input, everyone! I will admit that I am a bit surprised at the value, but I can totally see why an off-centered coin like this would bring $10 or less.

Are you planning on selling by any chance, since you are asking for values? Just curious.
