It seems that far fewer people in the U.S. and the U.K. know as much about jetons as people in Europe do.

I have a couple of jetons myself, but although I come across them in a dealer's junk box where I am a customer, I don't see them much anywhere else. I don't collect them. because I know so very little about them.

I would suggest that you review coin collector sites, especially those in Western Europe, where I suspect the total body of knowledge would be much greater.

You never know, this route may even reveal some good publications on the subject of jetons, but I guess that they would be written in French or German, OK if you know either of these languages.

I'm not aware of any "price guides" for jetons, in any language. Doesn't mean there aren't any, just that I've never heard of one.

Your best bet for indicator of value is to search ebay or other sales venues for similar items that sold. Here's one just like yours that sold for ten euros. I found it by googling the Latin phrase on the reverse: "ET VICTOR FULMINA PONIT".

Searching for "ET VICTOR FVLMINA PONIT" instead found me this one for sale for 24 euros; I suspect that one has a higher price because it's actually dated 1698, while yours and the ebay one are not.

I concur with Sap. I have not laid eyes on a price guide for jetons either. And as Sap said, as with many other types of exonumia, the best way to gauge worth is to see what other like specimens in the market have sold for.

Moreover, his technique of googling the Latin phrases on these type of specimens are many times the best way to find similar examples. That's one technique that I also do.

This is exactly the same picture as this one offered for sale currently on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeton-1698-...t_500wt_1141

and I've recently seen it on this or another forum posted by someone claiming to be the vendor.

All very strange. Certainly the one offered on ebay is wildly overpriced.

Some of the old French Jetons were listed in the original Charlton Catalogue- Catalogue of Canadian Coins, Tokens and Paper Money- before the catalogue was split into 3 parts. These were jetons of the French regime before the British Conquest. I suspect there might be some in France, but I do not know of any personally.
