robbudo Pillar of the Community United States 2759 Posts	Posted 02/19/2012 7:11 pm Just plucked this from a roll. I took a pic of the steps on the reverse with a flash, so it doesn't appear dark. The color on the first two images matches fairly well with the actual color. It is the most convincing I've found that fits the profile of a 'black beauty'. I find black nickels all the time from the 80's, but I know the black beauties with their sintered planchets came out of the late 50's. How rare are these? I saw one of these listed online for $140 - but know it isn't THAT rare. It sure is cool, though. hard to get good pics of the color! Thoughts on condition and the black-beautyness of this one? I can't grade it accurately but I'll guess it is AU55 or AU58 with a couple spots of verdigris or corrosion on both sides. In between the L and I in LIBERTY and at the base of the wig, other side in between the letters of STATES and before O in OF I like them a lot and that is what they nickname a true "Black Beauty". Most of the examples you see on ebay are actually darkened due to environmental damage. Unless a Black Beauty has booming luster, you have to assume environmental damage.
