A friend of mine and I were talking recently and we decided to contact Star Grading Service in an attempt to do a submission test to see exactly what they would tell us and we both believed the request would be turned down as we believe that in order to get coins graded by them you have to be part of their "FAMILY". However, we wanted to make sure that it wasn't due to the number of coins being submitted.

I wrote them two different e-mail submissions using two different anonymous e-mail accounts one day apart with requests and WHOOAAAA did we get two different interesting responses. First we submitted a request to grade a 1964 Proof set and then we submitted a request to grade an unopened mint box of 10 - 20th Anniversary Silver Eagles.

SGS responded almost immediately to both e-mails.

Here's a copy of the e-mails and responses...

Hi,

We currently are not taking any new clients for SGS grading as due to
the tremendous demand for our services we are absolutely covered with
grading orders.

We have at least a 9-month waiting list currently and can put you on
the list if you want. It takes a very long time to teach graders and we
are going as fast as we can. If you want on the waiting list send us you
address and we will put you on list.

Thank you very much for asking for SGS services and I am sorry that we
can not be of more help but SGS coins have more than exceeded our
expectations.

David

subject How to Submitt 20th Anniversary Coins?

I am wanting to submit an unopened mint box of 10 sets of 20th Anniversary Silver Eagles for grading.

There are a total of 30 coins for grading 10 Mint state, 10 Proof and 10 Reverse Proof coins.

Please advise me on what I will need to do as your web site states I will need an authorization number before I can send in my coins.

Thank you.

Dear Mr.,

Yes we can grade your Eagles and yes you do needa authorization number.

Please ship and adequately insure coins.

Ship to:

SGS
Star Grading Service
38 Church Street
Belleville, Ohio 44813

On outside of box put:
LLB012307MASTO

Thanks for asking, Dave from SG

Talk about BS coming from them! They are not taking any new clients and have a 9-month waiting list! But they will accept my Silver Eagle order post haste! We all know about SGS but I would never repeat never send anything to SGS because #1 of this obvious outright LIE! Next I'd be afraid of them telling me the item got lost in the mail.

I did this experiment in order to see if it were really possible for people to actually send in items for grading due to the PNG grading survey that had questionable responses regarding "Customer Service & Products" listed on the survey. I know essentially of no one that has ever sent items into SGS but only of their obvious sellers whom I believe to be family and close friends. I seriously doubt very many true coin dealers have ever used them.

I still don't understand how they can say they aren't taking any clients and have a 9 month waiting list, and the next day they are accepting submissions!

I would be more worried about them swapping possible RP70's from your sets to another.

It might be explained by them having only 1-2 different sized holders and the ones for ASEs happen to be one of them

Just another fact to prove that these guys are not legit. Never really trusted them in the first place and have never bought one of their slabs. I can't believe that some people do.

I made a post on the "Coins & Paper Money" forum and posted a link to the full story on the e-Bay Group "CoinForgeryeBay".

That post was pulled by the moderators of Coins & Paper Money forum.

The post still remains on the CoinForgeryeBay there.

I do NOT understand the reason for the pull. I made no mention of ANY e-bay auction or member within that post nor did I post a copy of the e-mails I received from Star Grading Service there.

Here's a copy of the original post and you tell me what I did wrong?

SGS Submission Experiment !!! LIES !!!

A friend of mine and I were talking recently and we decided to contact Star Grading Service in an attempt to do a submission test to see exactly what they would tell us and we both believed the request would be turned down as we believe that in order to get coins graded by them you have to be part of their "FAMILY". SGS responded almost immediately to both e-mails.

I will not post the edited copies of the e-mails here in this forum but they can be found in the Groups forum along with the unedited portion of this post

HERE http://groups.ebay.com/thread.jspa?...=15&start=-0

JUST REMEMBER!!!! SGS LIES!!!! LIES!!!! LIES!!!!

BTW, I also know about that forums moderators pulling loads of posts there and even banishing members from posting for periods of time. This makes my third pink slip from them for complaining about their seller ABONCOM. However, I thought I worded my post so that it wouldn't get pulled... OH, well what do I know anyway?

It appears to me that e-Bay is now taking a PRO SGS stand.

Also, the "HERE" link in the post is a link to the post I made on the CoinForgeryeBay Group you must join using your e-Bay ID in order to go to my post there. There is also some interesting reading there.

And that is one reason Marv why I don't understand how come more members here and in other forums that most of us belong to don't use another site for selling or buying our coins. There are more than enough of us to make a difference. There is a member here who has an auction site that if we all used could really get up and running and his fees are extraordinarily low. ebay to me right now is just a necessary evil because not enough people will take a stand and just go somewhere else.
I may get slammed a little and perhaps get in trouble but ebay is the pits.

I totally agree that ebay is to big and charges tomuch for their services. You may place coins forsale for FREE on yahoo auction.

I wish that there were more choices and ebay would get cut down in size.

Sure can, if you want to give them away.

Let's do the math...

Yahoo - $0.00 in fees and sell for $10.00
ebay - $1.75 in fees and sell for $20.00

I'll pay the fees.

Yahoo auctions get about 1/100th of the traffic ebay auctions do. You get what you pay for. As much as we all hate it, ebay has earned the right to charge what they do.
