Would I be right in thinking that all Canadian cents minted before 1990 have copper in them ?

The "switch" from copper to Cu plated steel was made about ten years ago. So the 1 cent coins until (and including) 1996 should have copper, while the ones made 1997 and later are steel coins methinks. But I suppose that in the Canadian forum http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...?FORUM_ID=32 they will know more about that.

The change was made from mostly copper (.980) to copper plated zinc in 1997.Starting in 1999 some of them were copper plated steel, those being marked with a small letter P.It's hard for me to keep track but from 2003 on there seem to be both steel and zinc examples minted.

I ask because here in AZ we get a lot of Canadian cents and most of the years I find in roll searching are from the 60's 70's and 80's.
I save all copper cents so I will just add them to my jar of copper Lincoln cents.
Thanks Bruce.
Rest in Peace

Bruce, That's interesting because here in Colorado (obviously closer to Canada), we hardly ever see Canadian coins. I love Canadian coins, and wish we would see more I could take out of circulation.
