What-Would-Cause-This-On-A-Coin?

I was just wondering what would cause that thing in the middle? It might be hard to see exactly what it looks like in the picture, but it kinda looks like a glob of extra metal in the middle.

It looks added, probably silver solder.

Over 50+ years ago for most of Humanity there was not much to do on those cold winter months. No video games, no Internet, no Facebook or Twitter, no computers, no satellite/cable T.V., and no texting.
So out of sheer boredom, people sat around and thought of ways to mutilate the components of our Hobby!
