Hi! What I was researching yesterday when I found this site was the initials V.D.B on Lincoln pennies. I know whose initials they are and that they are on the 1909 cents. I read somewhere that they were taken off the pennies in 1909 but replaced on the obverse (below his coat on his right side?)if I am understanding or remembering correctly in 1918.

I have looked at my Post 1918 pennies and some online and haven't been able to find the initials. Are they just hard to find, wear out easy or perhaps I'm just not finding them when they are right there in front of me. Thanks in advance and also for being such a great resource!

They are very small on the bottom of the bust, towards the left side. Look at the "Y" in Liberty and follow that straight down to the bottom of the bust above the rim.

Thank you! I was actually looking below the bust... That's why I wasn't finding the initials. I know where to look now Thanks again for your time!

It was good they put them back on in 1918, since it helps find any counterfeit 1914 D coins. A 1914 D won't have VDB on them.

Thanks! That is one thing I love about this hobby with the Internet available for research, etc. There is nearly an endless supplies of coin "stuff" to research and learn about.

Now I need to check out the 1914 D's on the Internet and also in the few coin books I have. Both my 1914's were minted in Philadelphia, but what was said about the 1914-D's is still interesting, and who knows? Someday I may end up with one (1914-D)

I had the opportunity to examine a counterfeit 1914-D last Sunday.
Actually, two.
One had the initials and it was obvious to me.
But the other did not show the initials.
It could have fooled anyone.
It fooled the dealer who bought it. At an $80+ loss to him.

One of those little things that a collector can learn here, thanks to all of the good people who take the time to post.
A great picture, "upstate."
