I'm going to start to put together a collection silver & silver clad Kennedy halves and Ike dollars. Is there a preference among collectors as to PCGS graded coins or NGC graded coins? Or as long as the coin is graded properly you don't really care?

There is a slight preference for PCGS, but unless you're going for very high grade coins, it doesn't matter if they're graded or certified at all; they're all common modern coins.

I'm looking for MS-65 or better coins.
I'm fine with going to coin shows and grading and picking out coins that aren't slabbed. But the supply is limited so I'm sure a number of the coins I'll be buying online. I've never had much luck buying raw coins through the mail. I waste too much time and money returning over graded coins. I'm sure that's not new to anybody here.
At least if I'm buying slabbed coins online there's a better chance I'm getting what I pay for.

Just keep in mind that slabs aren't really a guarantee. It's quite common to find over-graded slabbed coins. They might also match the technical grade but be visually unappealing for some other reason, like poor strike, ugly toning or die state.
Buy the coin, not the slab.

I am sure many of you are already familar with http://www.proxibid.com, I buy a lot of coins from their auctions, I am not into slabbed coins but I do know that there are plenty of slabbed and gradded coins sold in the auctions. There have been many that that have sold on this site that just out of curiosity I have looked up on ebay and the web and they usualy sell for a lower price point than found elsewhere on the web. I also know that most of the companies that are selling on this site also offer guarentees so if you are not really satisfied with the quality of the coins received I am sure they would offer you your money back. I know that all the coins I have bought from the 20 or so auctions I was bought from have all been exactly as advertised and I do not regret any of my purchases.

I don't agree with that. Part of grading is eye appeal. That's why they say it is an art form rather than scientific and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or, in this case, should I say beauty is in the eye of the holder (AKA slab)?

If I were going to build a high grade set, my obsessive nature would want them to match; that is, all from the same TPG. However, which TPG is a good question. I do not have an answer yet, other than making the choice from the top tier graders.

I would definately aggree on buying the coin, not the slab. I do not have alot of experience with slabbed coins, but the optic must me most important, I think. IMO

I think we're in agreement that the coin is what's most important. But, when you're hunting for slabbed coins do you find yourself giving a preference to PCGS graded coins or NGC graded coins or even ANA graded coins?

Currently, the only reason I have for buying a slabbed coin is for authentication purposes. That being the case, I do not think it matters which slab it is in; I feel when it comes to authentication, all of the top tier graders stand on equal ground. What grade they give it is meaningless to me, as I set the price based on my own opinion (highly weighted towards eye appeal). In the end, the coin will come out of the slab anyway. Of course, all of that will change if and when I decide to build a high end collection.
