Its not a problem for ebay they make up the difference by charging the honest sellers more to do business. I agree with SteveG !! the buyers have to bear some responsibility for encouragement of this type of activity . Metalman

I don't think ebay cares. I've complained before and NOTHING!! I made the mistake once of giving a Neutral saying coin was good but postage paid was 1/3 of what he charged. He gave me a Negative back. Crying about electric, phone, salaries, etc. Yeh, right!!

Yeah, this has been a growing problem on ebay. Sellers do that to avoid fees. I've learned to look at the bid and the shipping and bid accordingly. If it's worth 100.00 and I buy it for 25.00 plus 40.00 shipping, I guess it doesn't matter. The only thing that makes me mad is when I get all excited about something that looks GREAT because it has a low bid and then I scroll down and see the shipping costs are outrageous!!! I consider it a waste of my time to keep looking at those kind of listings. Unfortunately as a seller I've been on the other side of the problem. I've lised things with a 5.00 shipping cost and then found out it weighed more than I thought and it cost me twice that much to ship it to the seller.

I'm sorry, but I don't know that I blame him, as long as the shipping was clearly stated in the listing. I'm not saying I condone overcharging for shipping, but if you know the charge up front I don't think you deserve to complain. It's no different than buying a coin when the listing clearly states the coin was cleaned, then leaving a neutral saying the coin was cleaned. quote: but postage paid was 1/3
We charge $2.00, postage is 77¢. Do we get a neutral? Do you know somewhere I can get bubble mailers, bubble wrap, labels, printer ink, and someone to pack them up and take them to the post office for free? If so, I'd consider lowering it.

In my case, postage was "calculated" in ebay using Priority Mail and required insurance. It came in an envelope, a SMALL piece of bubble pack, no insurance (the postage on it was not enough to have included it.

Ah, so your grievance was not really that you paid more for postage than the seller spent. But rather that you paid for services (Priority mail, padded mailer, insurance) that the seller either verifiably didn't provide or you suspect he didn't provide.
It ticks me off when you leave a neutral and the other party escalates to a negative out of spite. I mean, turn-about is fair play, right? He shouldn't have left worse than a neutral for your act of leaving a neutral.

All shipping should be done by the caculate shipping button according to buyer's location. But then that is'nt alway's fair as I have purchased a few notes and why I have'nt a clue they indicated they were using UPS. UPS fee was over 5.00 so I paid the few and it came USPS for under 1 dollar. It is like computer hacking and security. Ther is alway's a weak port for the worm to slide in. The shipping issue is going to be a tough nut for ebay to crack...

I agree with the fee avoidance and am surprised more sellers don't try... I think it might fly, but would have to be explained, otherwise most buyers would have the same reaction that started this post...
I wouldn't matter to me if I paid $90 for a coin and $10 for insured shipping or $10 for the coin and $90 for shipping... If I felt the coin were worth $100 bucks I would buy it.

I think most sellers on ebay don't know that the USPS and UPS are different. I have seen them confused more times than I care to recall.

If for no other reason it should matter if you ever want a refund. Sellers don't have to refund shipping. Your $100.00 coin would get you a $10.00 refund minus your return shipping. Besides, if you (knowingly) help a seller rip ebay off of fees, you're only hurting yourself in the long run. When fees go up, buyers ultimately pay. And patronizing sellers who will do that, just drives the decent sellers off.

Good point SteveG... I have neither bought nor sold coins with a "fee avoidance" shipping rate... If the practice became commonplace, ebay would have to respond. I wouldn't call a seller that clearly states everything up front an "un-decent" seller. Everyone knows what shipping actually costs, but in a free market system, who gets to decide what is a fair handling fee?

Here's food for thought on high shipping. I know someone that lives 30 miles in the sticks. They have a non-USPS mail carrier, in a beat up old right-hand drive Cherokee, that they intensely don't trust. So it's a 60 mile round trip to the PO.
As the guys in the striped shirts say, "You make the call".

You know, Bobby, we all make choices and compromises about where we live. The Boston-metro area has extremely high mortgages and extremely-high property taxes. And you wouldn't believe what it costs to keep this drafty old house in heating oil for the winter. Just waking up in the morning probably costs me what your friend spends driving to the PO. If I were a high-volume seller on ebay, I wouldn't expect my buyers to subsidize my outrageously high cost of living through add-on fees. Your friend's $30 coin isn't worth $35 to me just because his post office isn't on his way to work in the morning. Sorry.
