Hello All , I got this medal at an auction recently and was wondering if it was worth much? It's supposedly a medal celebrating James Cook 300th anniversary on Australia 1770-1970 supposedly silver ,minted by Stokes Australia and also the words 'National Trust of Australia Victoria' any help would be great.

Regards

Kevin

From a member posting on Stampboards.com. There was a member inquiring about a bronze version of you medal.

According to the Museum Victoria Website over 40 different medals were made to commemorate Cook's Bicentenary in 1970. (sounds like something to start collecting )

They have examples from the Daily mail, House of Hawke, State Savings bank, Solvol Soap, PJ Downie. etc.... (but no National Trust ) most of them minted by Stokes.

Noble Auction of Australian Historical Medals
lists James Cook 1970, National Trust Medal, extrememly fine in case for $50
(no picture but I'm assuming it's the same)

Also it's 200th...not 300th

Yep the links were all dead which is why I removed them. I did some search on the site and found nothing else.

The coin appears to be pewter but without it in hand I can't be certain

The medal is listed in the Carlisle catalogue of Australian Historical Medals as number C1970/32. The mintage is 3000 bronze, 300 silver. It was designed by famous sculptor-medallist Andor Meszaros, the same person who designed the unofficial "swan dollar". The 2010 price guide supplement for this catalogue lists the silver version of this medal at Au$45.

No wonder I couldn't find anything. How many different books/catalogues do you own?
