I have seen quite a few Australian florins in the date range 1938 to 1941, which seem to display turning marks on the edge of the rims. It seems as if the weight of the planchet was reduced in some sort of turning process prior to striking. I have never seem any sort of article in any coin magazine that would relate to these particular marks on the rims.

Is there any in the expert panel of CCF members, who can shed some light on what appears to be turning marks on these coins?

Sel, I did noticed the 1940(2) had a deeper reeding than the other dates, and a 1938 was sort of beveled edge to it on one side of reeding , I will dig out more of those dates tomorrow , most of my high grades are in the old type pcgs slabs so will be hard to see if not impossible. Interesting question that

I would like to see photo references of that year range. I have a couple 43's and now I'm interested in seeing the difference.

kookboox10: I don't think the weight adjustment was carried out on U.S. wartime minted Australian Florins. Both Mints (SF and Melbourne) would have been too busy to expend the labour required to do so.

BTW, SF minted florins, shillings sixpences and threepences in '42, '43 &'44,
Denver minted sixpences and threepences in '42 and '43.

That would make a nice sub set (14 coins in all), of U.S. minted Australian sterling silver.

The highest catalog value in MS60 of any of these coins is around $30, and with a bit of luck, could be acquired for around 1/2 to 2/3 of that cost.
