Hi guys, I'm planning to buy a 1 oz kangaroo, but as I'm buying from a person, I'm really worried that it could be fake.

Could you please help give me some pointers on this particular coin. The ad does not show the actual coin, just some webshots of the model. I'm not experienced in assaying but I'm hoping there are some give always. I'm seen many videos of fake gold and silver not responding to strong magnets.

That's the problem, so I cant rely on the magnet to check.

This video shows fake silver bards that are not attracted to magnets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgjGJtcgfuA

I have never heard of fakes of these, but I like your attitude in being careful. The Perth Mint has very high production standards.

Personally, I would rather prefer to buy from a private individual in person, and ask for a receipt, even if it is entirely hand written. This becomes a legal document. Any registered business would, as a matter of course, issue a receipt.

I am very loathe to spend large amounts of money via the Web, unless the individual or dealer is well known to me. I like to see the coin in hand before I buy.

I note that you are from the UAE. I have seen pictures of gold coin vending machines operating in this part of the world. They are usually located in banks. You may wish to investigate this possibility.

Thanks for the fast replies guys.

Sel, I'm to meet the seller in a few hours but I don't really know how to tell the difference other than by weight and even at that I'm not great.

Belly that is the best resource I've found and actually shows a fake & how to spot a few differences. The worst part is their very true disclaimer "Of course there's no guarantees that other Kangaroos aren't circulating without these differences."

Note down the differences carefully, and take a jeweler's loupe with you.
Your very first words should be ones of doubt, to give yourself the psycological advantage in the negotiation.
Reference bellyflorin's website to the seller.
