Hi there,

I am new so go easy on me!

I have been given some coins and have had quite a lot of fun trying to find out about them but there is one I just can't seem to find any pictures of, let me describe it.

It is a very small coin that is silver in colour. Once side has a bust of a gentleman with a wreath around his head and long hair and the reverse has two interlocked C's back to back with a crown on the top.

The coin has milled edges, is thin and lightweight.

The wording on the bust side is: CAROLVS.II. DEI.GRATIA
On the reverse is: MAG.BR.FRA.HIB.REX.1676

I can't seem to find any pictures of coins made in 1976 so wondering if there is a good website for checking this sort of thing out?

It's is a really pretty little coin and surprisingly it's in pretty good nick for something so old. All the detail is there. I'm guessing is wasn't used very much. Probably as clear as a few of those old pennies in circulation now.

Anyone got any pointers input? What type of coin is this? :)

All feedback greatly appreciated.

Hello, Kookieshell, and welcome!

John Roettier, a coin designer, found an interesting way to represent the denomination on Charles II's coins, one C for a penny, two interlocked C's for two pence (halfgroat), three for a threepence, and four for a groat. Otherwise many old UK coins don't even have a hint of the denomination other than some subtleties in the design or the size.
So your coin, 2 pence, must be only 14 mm in diameter and 1.0 gram in weight.
Traditionally British coins had Latin legend, often abbreviated, in your case meaning Charles II by the grace of god king of Great Britan, France, and Ireland.

A good site to peruse for old British coins is Tony Clayton's Coins of the UK. Although, he doesn't have your coin. For Ch.II lower denomination (he calls them "Maundy Set") he has only undated early designs by Thomas Simon.
