So I kind of want a coin of the final Roman Emperor. And I know that coins from this period are often very poorly made yet quite uncommon and a bit pricey. So what do you guys think of this Anastasius? It is pretty rough, but most of the others I see listed for much more do not seem to be in much better condition. Any opinions? Is it worth the $9 total?

Not much to look at, if you can get it for $5 go for it. But I wouldn't pay much more than that, there are much better examples out there for jusdt a few dollars more.

Actually Zeno is the last emperor to be in the "Roman" category of coins. Anastasius is the first when it comes to Byzantine.

As for the coin, the obverse looks decent and if the reverse is in a similar condition (the two pics in the description aren't loading completely for some reason on my computer so I can't really see the reverse), then it might be an ok buy for $9, not a great buy, but ok.

Thanks for the input!

Out of curiosity, why is it that the death of Zeno in 491 marks the end of the "Roman" empire? After all, Anastasius took the throne at Zeno's death, so I don't really see a great rupture in terms of succession.

For Anastasius and the price, go for it. But don't get hung up on the bidding if it goes much higher.

Well it depends on what source that you are using, the Roman Empire fell in 476 and from that time until 491 the empire was ruled by puppet emperors. Most sources use the date 491 and the emperor Anastasius as the first Byzantine emperor.

The reason coin collectors consider Anastasius the breaking point between Roman and Byzantine is that he did the currency reform that introduced the large M reverse standard 'Byzantine' coins. If you want a coin of the last Roman in this sense, you need a pre-reform Anastasius which would be an AE4. For comparison, here is a 40 nummi coin like you propose and and a 1 nummus from the first part of the reign when Anastasius might still be called the last Roman emperor. It is a very artificial distinction so you can collect whatever you desire and call it whichever you wish and make a case for the coin representing the switch-over.

OK, Will I paid the $8.88 for it (not a bad price considering that it is being shipped from Germany). So I'll let you guys know how it is in hand.
