This is a billon trachy of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I 1143-1180 and is Sear # 1966. While double strike errors are fairly common on Byzantine coins. I find this error very uncommon. The obverse depicts Christ enthroned and the letter IC-XC in the corners. As you know these are the Greek letters for Jesus Christ. The error on this coin is that instead of the IC-XC there is XC-XC. This is the first time that I have come across this mistake.

Way cool! Thanks for sharing this. I only have one Byzantine and I had no idea what the IC-XC meant, so I thank you for enlightening me. During this time period punishments for crimes and wrong-doings were often very harsh. I wonder what happened to the poor soul that misspelled the name of the Son of God in this highly religious society?

I had the same thought especially knowing how devote the Byzantines were. BTW, you will also see the letters MP-OV on this coin type which denotes Mother Mary.
