Hello all,

I am fairly new to coin collecting and had a basic question that I was hoping to get advice on.

I am looking to put together a collection of the 1/2 Gold American Eagles. Been doing this with the ASEs so figured it might be a good time to start the gold ones.

As for the AGEs (1/2 oz), the Mint State (for me) does not need to be 70 (Can be a low MS)). Prefer that they are graded and in slabs. I'm looking for the twofer of collecting but also as an investment here.

Does anyone here collect these? If so, what advice might you give to someone just looking to start out?

Thanks!

Metro

Halves are the least popular denomination, you should have no problem picking up slobbed 65 for slightly over spot.

A collection of $25 GAE will be costly. If you want them slabbed, and aren't worried about the big seven-oh, the added expense of certification will be minimal. Especially considering each one is 1/2 toz of gold! Expect to pay about $900 a piece depending on the spot price of gold the day you buy.

I use to have a small collection of these but have sold/traded them and now have none. I preferred the proofs for their beauty but then you get into more money. If you buy MS certified, get MS69s as lower grades like 67 or 68 are essentially the same price

You can get the proofs for very little premium as well. Personally I like the packaging and capsule that the mint uses for the proof GAE coins and think the proofs look a lot better than the mint state coins. That's just me though.
