Crispus AE3. 325-326 AD. CRISPVS NOB CAES, Laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right. / PROVIDENTIA CAESS, campgate with two turrets & star above, six brick layers. SMHG in ex. RIC VIII Heraclea 75

This coin has some green spots that I think could be bronze disease. I tried brushing out the green and it didn't flake away. I also tried scraping it out carefully and couldn't remove it either. The green is inside of some very small pits as you can see from the image.

Also, wild winds says this coin is silvered. This coin doesn't appear to be silvered or even had a silver wash unless the color of the coin means that it used to have silver on it. Does anyone know?

This is the first of a few coins that I posted, that I ordered from a shop on VCoins. These coins come from the United Arab Emirates region. They finally arrived today. I'm kind of busy today so I'm only going to post one every so often until they are all posted instead of doing them all at once.

Hi Gil,

I don't know about the possible BD, but here is an example of this coin that is described as a normal bronze so I wouldn't think this particular type would necessarily have to be silvered or washed.

This coin type did have a silver wash but it has worn off. The two small spots do look like they may be BD, but as long as it's not powerly it's probably inactive. Keep an eye on it if it start to spread than you will need to treat it.

I just realized that I have an example of this coin in my own collection. Part of my desert patina addiction.

It doesn't look silver but here it is:

Apparently, some have a silver wash and some don't as I can see.

I already tossed the coin in distilled water to leave it soak for awhile. We'll see how it goes.

This coin is cleaned and considerably worn. It would be amazing if any silvering remained on a coin that far gone.

There isn't any silver on this coin at all that I can see. I was wondering since I saw a silver wash version at wildwinds. Also, the reddish color of the coin.

Forgot to mention, this is my first Crispus coin.

Nice coin! Nice clear legends!

An experienced coin dealer was explaining to me that (back in the day) a lot of the silvered coins were placed in a vinegar solution to strip the silver and put back into circulation. Of course the perpetrators reclaimed the silver for themselves. I have no idea about the validity of this.
