Poll Question
I asked my 70-year-old friend who I used to work with if he was one of the silver coin hoarders and here is what he had to say via email: Quote: I went to the Seychelles in late 1966, and at the time, nobody had started pulling silver coins out of circulation. By the time I came back three years later, the hoarding crazing had started and been in full swing for two or three years. Also, in those days the value of silver was nowhere near as high as it is now, so I didn't see it as worthwhile. Even as recently as the early to mid 70s, it's silver content was worth only about 30% over it's face value. So I want to see what you guys have to say about this subject.

I voted yes and still have the coins today. The thing is I wasn't hoarding. I liked collecting silver dollars so when I could I picked up a roll or two. I searched halves, quarters & dimes for albums but didn't keep anything other than what I needed. After 1964 I did keep any silver I got in change but quit roll searching when life & family took priority. During the bubble I sold off enough "junk" silver to cover my initial costs so everything I have now was basically free. Currently that amounts to approx 800 silver dollars plus another 150 oz of misc US & Canadian silver. Not bragging. Wasn't smart enough to hoard but was lucky enough to be a collector.

I wasn't even a thought in my parent's mind at that time, I'm only 27. I only wish I were alive.

I have been an active coin collector all of my life.
I started hoarding junk silver for about a year, and capped it off with a half kilogram silver bar. I sold just after the peak, which I was watching like a hawk.
What triggered an instant bailout was a radio announcement of the first news that the Hunt Brothers were in strife. Tripled my overall investment.
Retrospect says that I was lucky. I used the profit to buy a new set of shock absorbers for my car.
The car has long since found it's way to the crushers.
Cars are the most efficient way I know of, to waste my money.

Didn't actively hoard, but I picked out everything I saw. Eventually, I sold most in 1980 to pay for grad school. You could easily find silver in circulation all the way through the early/mid-70s and not just in Nevada. Even seeing a Morgan or Peace dollar as payment in a grocery store in 1975 wouldn't cause too many double takes except from collectors.

I started saving silver coins from circulation in 1982, because my grandfather said silver would skyrocket again someday. When silver was in the $4-$5 oz range, a 40% Half was worth barely above face in melt value. Many roll hunters of that time must have thrown 'em back, judging my how many I ended up with. Ah, the Eighties and early Nineties. Good times! Not all silver saving was in the Sixties, you know. I had several silver coins in my change last year!

In 1980 when silver approached $50, I was a roll hunter in high school, searching dimes, quarters, and halves. Even then, I was aware of the 40% halves, but for some reason they were just not in demand?
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

My parents were 8 and 10 in 1966 but they each have a little silver collection from when they got the bug.
