I found this 1952s penny in my collection that has a clump of copper pressed into the date of this coin causing the tail on the 5 to be shorter than other coins with the same date (in relationship to the "S" mint). This clump is definitely copper and looks like it came from the mint this way. Has anyone seen anything similar to this. How can this happen. I'm inexperienced in coin collecting and how the coins are stamped.

It is a die chip. After a while the die can deteriorate and pieces break off of the die, leaving "clumps" like that on the coin.

I would keep it. It doesn't add much value, since it is so small, but it is a nice example.

wquinn got it, die chip. Not a huge premium, you can get a few dollars for it but not much else.

It surprises me that the die would be made out of copper. So this "clump" is likely a piece of the die?
Rest in Peace

Certainly not. The chip in the (steel)die fills with (copper)planchet metal just like the rest of the design.

I have found two of these and have been told that the filled 5 is actually a misplaced "D" Mint Mark. Check to see if the Southwest edge of the filled part of the five is actually straight. If it is, its a misplaced "D" mint mark.

KYPennyPitcher,

you have been told wrong by someone with a fanciful imagination, there are no known examples of a mintmark on top of a date and die chips in the date are exceedingly common on 1950s-era wheaties.

Twisttop to the CCF.

Your coin has been correctly identified as a die chip in the 5 of the date ... and there is no more to add to that discussion than what has already been wisely stated.

I am writing primarily encourage our other newer member KYPennyPitcher to stick around and gain some knowledge from true experts.

Truly ...

Whoever gave this 'advise' is seriously misinformed about coins and I would encourage you to solicit the advise of the CCF experts instead going forward.

Welcome to both of you.

Hi TwistTop! Nice find. There have to people that collect die chip errors. Finding one from each date and mint would certainly be a challenge. Haven't seen one from 1952S so KEEP IT!!!

Both examples shown on this thread are die chips, but it does bring to mind one example that has confused some experts in the past. It is the 1956-D "Re-Punched Date".

This photo is courtesy of Joe Curry and shown on this page, along with another photo of the same coin: http://www.Lincolncentsonline.com/r...rieties.html

Some say this is caused from a die being re-ingraved with the same date, others think it was caused by die dents that just happen to resemble a second digit.

There are some known examples of the mint mark being in the date, between two of the digits. At least a couple of examples from 1956.

Hey there! I know I'm late to the party, but I have one of these as well. I'm new for the most part to this game but I've been having a lot of fun. Here's a picture of mine:
