Is this on anyone's radar. Came across it today and liked the way they put it together. The 50K mintage is nice as well. But I believe the coin its self has a mintage of 350K. They could of made this set a lot better with another design limiting the actual mintage to 50k. Seems like they're taking lessons from TPG's. Creating value in everything but the coin. lol But still had to order one. It is a real cool set but the way I read it is that the coin will have a mintage of 50K and the program, Defenders of Freedom, will have a total mintage of 350K.

How I read it is that there will be 350k of the coins minted, just the "deluxe" set is limited to 50k.

I agree, that is kinda what I meant. 350K split between, proof, deluxe, and uncirculated.

The US Mint has been offering "special" packaging of some of its modern commems since 1993 and the release of the James Madison coins. The sets have been labelled Young Collector sets, Educational sets, Coin and Stamp sets, etc. Some have been popular with collectors while the interest in others has lagged.
I like to have at least one example of each of the special sets in my collection, so I've been a regular buyer of them since the start.
I picked up a few of the Defenders sets on Day 1 -- you never know which sets will prove to be popular and see a rise in the value!

Can't beat the price they put on it, $2 over a proof. I think that's very reasonable.

yes, but you are paying $2.00 for a "mini" dog tag and a pamphlet. I agree that the price negligibly different- but unless the coin itself has some unpublished different feature- I doubt the extra two bones will make it any more desirable. Of course, I see the TPGs allowing submissions of it - so long as it is in its original government packaging - with a different label- and maybe some buyer premium.

I think it is amazing that the TPGs always find a way to put a spin on everything to make it more "desirable" (and of course to get more business). I always preferred the OGP to a slab anyway. This looks like a decent price for this set.

I like the coin and will get one. Being a Marine though, I'd like to see a coin of Sergeant Major Brad Kasal (my old Company Gunnery Sergeant) exiting the heck House in Fallujah and being carried by two Marines after saving some other young Marines from certain death.

And they put a limit of 100 per household. With it that high of a limit, why bother? I guess they are expecting some person/dealer to buy thousands of them?

The limits of 100 always cracked me up. If you wanted more most people have a way around.
