Hey guys, I started collecting the proof and other slabbed silver eagles this past year. Since its 2012 and I happen to have a bit of spare change, I was considering buying a 2012 1oz Proof Gold Eagle from the mint.
My question is, I was considering signing up for an NGC membership and submitting it myself, hoping (possibly expecting?) a PF70. Do you guys think this is worth it at all or am I going to go through a lot of work and extra expense for a not-so-likely 70?
I understand the annual fee is something like $40, and another $40 or so for the submission, but are there a lot of extra expenses involved that I haven't considered? Do I need to receive the package first and re-send or can it be sent to NGC directly from the mint?
Thanks! Noobie Collector

I personally would not go the rout to have it graded. It should come from the mint at a 69 or 70 state and unless it is graded in 70 your cost for grading has gone out the door. Use the money you would have spent on grading and pick up some other items.

Dont do it! You will be disappointed! The chances of getting a 70 are really low unless your a TPG trying to make money

Talk about confusing :) As I would expect (in my own mind), most coins should come from the mint as a PF69/PF70. Then again the latest post says it's quite rare! It is true that I would be really disappointed to get a PF69 though.
The upside to going with gold (at least in my mind) is that the silver products from the mint seem to have a very high propensity for milk spots, especially as of late. Almost every PF70 silver quarter or eagle that I've seen recently has at least some minor spotting. From what I understand, I shouldn't expect that with gold.
Thank you for the welcome!

IMO yes. A PF69 bullion coin would carry no premium over a non graded coin. Plus, you would lose all the cool mint packaging.....

I don't think it is worth it to grade any modern coin from the mint. The cost does not justify the rewards (if any) and they are beautiful without the slab. Of course this is personal preference and if you are planning to keep the coin then why bother? If you are selling it then it is your call.

Oh no plans to sell at all, whatsoever. Just thinking about slabbing for preservation and because I think they look pretty neat that way. I thought you could pay NGC like an extra $5 or so and get your original packaging back? It does sound like it may not be worth it though, hoping for a PF70. Just that personal appeal of having a "perfect" coin.

By the time you have the final tally of the submission, membership, shipping, insurance, etc, etc....you would be better off to purchase a PF70 on the open market. Your end result will be the same, without the hassle (worth something) and your time/money (worth a LOT).
Welcome aboard!

I would bet most people could not tell the difference between a PF69 and PF70 coin. I sure can't. I am content with knowing I have a beautiful coin that might grade a 70, but I don't care. It really is personal preference if you are keeping it for the long haul. By the time you sell it, gold will probably be double the current price and it won't matter what the grade is.

If you really want a 70 then buy one already graded...

, ohbejuan! Mr. Ken Obie- Slobbing is an awl-oar-nun proposition. Buy a 70 if you want one, but I think it's a waste of money either way.

I will let you be the judge on if you want to have the coin graded or not because that is entirely up to you just so long as you know there is a big chance it will come back a 69 and the grading fees will be gone as it will not add any value to the coin to be graded over OGP. I have not seen anyone answer the other question you had about if the mint will send it directly to NGC, the answer to that question is no. You will have to receive the package from the mint and then send it in to NGC to be graded
