This coin arrived today which was a great thrill to me. In fact there are two other falling horseman I would rather have had but this one is still wanted.

The reverse is a bit half way between FH1 kneeling and FH4 clutching showing that those distinctions can be a bit artificial but there is something else about this coin that makes it special to me and only my second out of well over 100 horseman coins. Can anyone guess what I consider so special?

I'm not a very good mind reader. Also, what's special about a coin to one person, might be a different reason to another. Although, I'm going to try by attributing the coin to get as many facts about the coin as I know how at this current stage in my learning about ancient Roman Imperial coins.

Constans, AE2. Thessalonica. D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, holding globe. / FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, soldier facing left, spearing fallen horseman who is bare-headed, forwards, on hands and knees. Shield to the right, on ground near the rear of fallen horse. Mintmark TS gamma star. RIC VIII Thessalonica 116.

This coin could be a AE2 or a AE3, depending on what your coin measures. The face of Constans looks rather crude, probably was that way after leaving the mint. The details while slightly worn on the reverse is really nice. I also like the color of the coin, assuming that it's close to in-hand.

Also note that RIC lists the coin as common. I have doubts about that rarity being accurate because I haven't seen one like this before. I believe the coin is far rarer than listed.

Doug, very nice coin I would love to have in my collection as well. As for the special item, I am going to guess that it is the bare-headed fallen horseman on hands and knees. I don't think I have seen many (or any) like this.

Gil-galad got it. I don't care what RIC says, no Falling Horseman coin with Constans is common. I have two an know where there is another priced over my head. This is among the most common ancient coin types for Constantius and not rare for Gallus and Julian. If you ever see one for Magnentius, buy it. Constans is in the middle but the RIC listing as common is hilarious.
