Question...for the longest time I've been collecting wheats to fill spots in the books. I didn't worry too much about the grade or color. Lately I've been replacing them with higher grades as the opportunity arises. I'm not sure exactly what I want my book to look like at the end. I would like as much uniformity as possible, but don't know how feasible it's going to be as far as price goes. I know some of the key dates will most likely be a lower grade compared to the others due to my budget and I'm ok with that (at least for now anyway). And now for my question...any advice? I was hoping to see some examples of other sets either complete or well on their way. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

It never ends. You'll find yourself continually upgrading. The more you upgrade, the more expensive your taste becomes. I like to think of it more as a journey rather than a destination!

Keys are the "key" point. As you mentioned, the keys are more than likely going to be of lesser quality, but that does not mean that they need to be "ugly". I am a type collector versus a series (one of every kind) collector, but my 7070 still holds the same value true. The newer coins would be of the best condition and gradually decrease in condition as the types descend into the first of the type.

Example, Cents; my Lincoln Memorial would be the best condition (MS-67RD), my Lincoln Wheat cent is a MS66RD, my Lincoln Steel is a MS-66, my V.D.B. is a MS-65RD, Indian cent (possibly) a MS-64RB, my CuNi Indian cent is a MS62, 1859 Indian cent is a AU-55, my Flying Eagle is a XF-40, etc... the further back in time the grade gradually decreases.

I feel that this gradual decrease in quality seems to fit my collection. Ultimately I (and virtually everybody else) would like to have a primo example of each...all in good time, especially since my collection is NEVER complete, because I will never be satisfied.

Success!

Another question is, what do you do with the ones you've replaced with upgrades? Do you demote them to another folder/album? Obviously for keys/wheaties, you'd keep them somewhere (or at least that's obvious to me), but as far as a 1964D (for example) is concerned, do you just return to circulation?

No I suppose you'd keep that one for the copper. :) Ok, how about a 99? Darn, you'd have to check that one for WAM.

Rats, I guess there's just no getting rid of coins.
