I'm looking into getting some Pre-33 US Gold and had a question. On APMEX they list the St Gaudens cleaned at $1,803, XF at $1,833, and the AU at $1,853. Is the $50 mark-up justified to get it not cleaned? For the $1 US Gold, type-3, there is a $70 mark-up from cleaned to AU. Just wanted to see what you guys have to say about it. Thanks

I too was looking over those same pre-1933 coins last night and found myself asking similar questions. IMHO, if I'm willing to buy a cleaned double-eagle or eagle, I'm probably better off just buying an AGE. The exception to this might be if I simply wanted a single lowest cost pre-1933 specimen for the collection. The markups you mention are more than I'd want to pay but it doesn't seem that far out of line.

I bought an AU plus St Gaudens a few weeks back from APMEX (when they were lower and premiums were reduced), and I can say I am very pleased with it. I received a 1908 NM, and it was low MS (61 or 62). Personally, I would buy bullion before the XF or Cleaned unless the premiums were the same.

Personally, I would go for the uncleaned examples over the cleaned simply because they have better eye appeal. You may want to consider some of the St. Gaudens that are graded MS-63 or 63 since they don't sell for much more than a EF/AU example.

I could care less about cleaning, as my eys-sight is way less then the x10 loupe, lol. Even though it does effect the value, my store would just buy close to melt if cleaned as would most....
You wanna go graded, MOST key to go VF or better IMO....

From what I have seen, "cleaned" = bullion value only and the higher grades seem to have some, although often not a lot, of numismatic value added to the bullion value. I agree with the comment about graded coins in this case. A 1-oz. gold coin that is graded at MS-63 is about the best bang for the buck out there in coins. Higher grades than that are often much more expensive, which is fine if you can get that much more out of it when you sell, but the question always is, "Will you?".
As a bullion collector, I would be attracted to the "cleaned" coins, knowing that its price was pretty much all about the gold weight in the coin and not because there was anything special about it.
As to whether or not one should just buy AGEs instead, well sure, that IS another option. Pre-1933 US gold coins are nice to look at, though, so I can see a collector having some of both.

Just to be clear, taparia, I'm in no way wanting to discourage your interest in pre-1933 gold. As Ed_B mentioned, I too can absolutely see there being room in any collection for some beautiful examples of St Gaudens gold. My comments were driven by my own efforts to discipline my buying. Seems like the minute I start factoring in "numismatic" value to a potential purchase, all I end up doing is trying to talk myself into paying way more than I should. Good luck with your own purchase!

Wow how do I answer this one.
Well by being fair and honest. Ungraded classic gold - I will sell you all day at the listed premiums - heck it is numismatic old rare gold coins. This is special and old.
When I am buying ungraded classic gold - your not going to catch me paying those very if not extremely high premiums. In fact I run away pretty fast.
Now for all those that were not paying attention we are talking UNGRADED GOLD CLASSIC COINS.
