About a month ago I bid and won this AE4 coin of Valentinian III at auction from a different seller in Jerusalem, Israel. It arrived today. It's a vary curious coin.. It is only 12mm, so it is very small and it is as green as the images below. But I'm having trouble making out the obverse and the reverse. I believe it is RIC X 2108, struck at Rome 425-455 AD:

OBV: DN PLA VALENTINIANVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right
REV: SALVS REIPVBLICE, Victory standing or advancing left, holding wreath and palm branch. Left field: S. Mintmark: RM

Valentinian-III

Valentinian-III

Does anyone make out the images?

The only thing I can make out with any certainty is the RM, anything else would be a guess on my part.

The reverse does look like RIC X 2108. RM in exergue is about all I can make out for sure.

Well, not only do I see RM, but I think I see an outline of the bust on the obverse. But for this era of Roman coins, yours is a decent example. I am curious as to what price you won it at.

Anyways here's my Valentinian III, in case you haven't seen it yet. The bust is kind of visible, and some of the reverse design is still there, but the mintmark isn't. I think I read somewhere that the flans were usually too small to incorporate the whole design on both sides; that that's the reason why the legends and parts of the designs are gone.

Obv: DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG
Rev: VICTORIA AVGG, Victory advancing left with head right, trophy over shoulder in right hand, and dragging captive with left, P in left field
RIC 2133 var, Rome, 11 mm
Minted between 430-437 AD

Valentinian-III
(It's kind of better in hand; I may re-photograph it soon)

I got this for $9. It is the first Val III in my collection so I was willing to pay this price for a coin not so readily identifiable. I will be looking to upgrade this sometime in the future, but for now it will do.
