how often do you see an auction and think yep, I will throw a bid at it, if it wins it does, if not so what? i do it often, but over the last month I have won about 5 out of 50. I'm starting to think its the best way to bid, if no one sees it, its mine cheap, and if someone bids I have lost nothing. or is it better to wait and snipe? if I do I tend to get caught in the frenzy and will often go to my limits to win. how do you bid and why?

That has happened to me a couple of times, early bid. That is how I got "stuck" with my DinoLite USB microscope. I was just playing around and nobody outbid me, and it was a good price too, just amazed that nobody else outbid me. Same thing happened this morning, won a really nice coin that went for way less than it should have. Sometimes you are the windshield, sometimes you are the bug. I will usually "watch it" and try to "snipe" it, if I can. I have on occasion get "caught up" and overbid in the action as well. I just get to sit on the sideline for a while until I build up my "allowance" that I set for myself, or sell something to supplement my "allowance". On occasion I will bid on something rare early on, just to say that I was bidding on a key coin, even though I had NO CHANCE on winning it! Best thing is having fun doing it!

I sometimes put a low ball bid on a few items just so I can slam dunk at the closing 3-5 seconds Occasionally I either forget about the items or am away at work without network coverage. I have been pleasantly surprised on quite a few occasions when I download my email

Sometimes I'll put an early bid on a coin on ebay that I'm just interested in following to see the final price. I have no hope of winning and have never won anything great this way. At times I've used Gixen sniping service for items I really really want. This is a free service and works well.

I rarely bid on anything that has more than a day to go. For the most part, I will simply bid once and bid my max as late in the auction as I can. Sometimes I'll wait until the last few seconds, sometimes I'll put my bid in within the last few hours depending on whether or not I'll be at my computer.
One advantage to sniping is that it doesn't tie up my money for very long. What I mean by that is this:
When you place a bid, you are obligated to that bid for the entire duration of the auction. Even if someone outbids you, you could still find yourself being the high bidder in the event the high bidder retracts their bid or the seller cancels their bid (I've had this happen to me before).
By sniping, if I get outbid I don't have to wait long for the auction to be over and then I'm free to spend my money on something else.

What is Gixen sniping service and how does it work?
I usually bid the same way as trout1105 "I sometimes put a low ball bid on a few items just so I can slam dunk at the closing 3-5 seconds"

Only when I see items that end at odd hours of the day and/or have really weak titles.

My strategy is pretty much the same as cwb8539. I always bid as late as possible to avoid those bidding wars.

I tend to bid very early in the auction with a few days to go. That way I can make up my own assessment of how much I want to pay without being influenced by other people going crazy.
I never pay more than I wanted. Sure you lose more auctions but you get more of them without getting caught in the frenzy.
