I received this 1928 Peace dollar from my father. Can't tell what the black stuff is. Looking for opinions on whether it is worth slabbing.

Thanks,
Brian

Definitely worth slabbing. If you are going to resale send it to PCGS, but you will have to pay a membership fee or send it to them through an authorized dealer. If you are going to keep it and just want it authenticated and graded send it to ANACS, they do not require membership so you can ship directly with a 5 day turnaround or 15 day at a discount. ANACS is on par with PCGS and NGC IMO as far as grading goes, but PCGS slabbed coins usually bring 10-20% more than the same coin would in a ANACS slab. The coin almost looks like it may have been cleaned a really long time ago and retoned. As far as the black stuff I don't know what that is. If it appears to be something stuck to the surface and not toning you should dip/soak it in pure acetone and then allow it to air-dry. Make certain you do not rub/brush/wipe it with anything though. It will evaporate dry very quickly.

Do not do this though until some others on here chime in and give their opinion. I don't want you to mess up such a nice coin and it be my fault.
