How is it that the Mint, and or Congress, has missed this MAJOR anniversary?

A commemorative coin or coin series should be issued.

Is this just another example of our inept Congressmen forgetting or not caring?

Any other thoughts?

Shouldn't the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War be at the end of the war and not it's beginning?

I agree with Bill069, we should celebrate the end of the war, not the beginning. However, this year there is a commemorative silver dollar that honors the infantry soldier from 1775 on.

If you are thinking a commemorative series of our circulating coins like what we did in 1976, it will never happen nor should it.

There is still a chance that a Civil War Sesquicentennial coin program can come to fruition. As of right now, one 2014 commemorative coin slot is open and both 2015 slots are available; 2012 and 2013 each have their two programs already on the books.

However, I don't believe there is currently a strong initiative to get a Civil War coin authorized. There are a few active bills proposing coins in 2015 (among them is one for the 75th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame and another for the 225th anniversary of the US Marshals Service) but nothing for the Civil War. Maybe it's because of the Civil War Battlefields commemorative coins that were issued back in 1995 -- too recent for another program?

I think overall, as a nation, we have been fairly quiet in terms of recognition and commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War years -- Congress hasn't even been able to pass an act to authorize a national Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission!

The Centennial was celebrated with a long list of medals and medallions throughout the period. Sad to say, but it doesn't look like any such numismatic commemoration is going to occur this time around.

Just buy the stamps for now, they'll have two different designs for the stamp sets, the 2nd is coming out next so the first one will run out soon, currently 45 cents, they'll go up in value to 50 cents soon, buy all you can.

They've also got some lunar dragon stamps out right now that are pretty cool.

I doubt if there will be any new commems, there were already three Civil War Battlefield commems issued in 1995(50c, $1, and $5).

As a kid, I remember reading a copy of
The Saturday Evening Post.
Inside, was a record of an interview with a photograph of an old lady who remembered the Civil War in her youth.

150 years duration is approximately six human generations.

Along the same lines, I've been wondering why we've seen no mention, anywhere, of commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812. No official declarations, observances, stamps, coins . . . nothing.

The War of 1812 is being commemorated with a Star Spangled Banner $1 and $5 to be issued later this year.

I agree.

I do not see a reason why there could not be a general commemorative set for the war itself.

I think that a series like that would sell rather well.

I would have definitely been interested in something like that.

M0nks, that is EXACTLY what I thought they should have done.

They really dropped the ball on this.
