I was doing some collection housekeeping/organizing this evening and counted up the NCLT commemorative silver dollars (36mm size) that the RCM has issued since 1971. The series now includes 58 distinct design types and numbers 103 distinct coins once strike type and special finishes are considered. And I'm happy to report that they look great together!

Here's the breakdown I came up with:

Available Individually
  • Annual Standard Edition, BU: 42 (1971-2012) -- features 42 distinct design types

  • Annual Standard Edition, Proof: 32 (1981-2012) -- same design types as BU coins

  • Annual Standard Edition, Enameled: 2 (2005, 2007) -- same

  • Special Edition, Proof: 12 (1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 [2], 2011) -- 12 distinct design types, 2 in high-relief (2008, 2010)

  • Special Edition, Enameled: 2 (2006, 2010) -- 1 distinct design type (2010), 1 same (2006)

  • Special Edition, Selectively Gold-Plated: 2 (2008, 2009) -- 2 distinct design types

Available Only As Part of a Set
  • Special Edition, Gold-Plated, Full: 1 (2002) -- same design as BU coin

  • Special Edition, Proof: 1 (2003) -- 1 distinct design type

  • Annual Standard Edition, Privy-Marked: 1 (2004) -- same

  • Annual Standard Edition, Selectively Gold-Plated: 8 (2005-2012) -- same

Note: Bold highlight denotes a number that went into overall totals (either 58 design types, or 103 total coins)

So, if you're looking for an attractive, historical and ongoing series to collect and require a good number of design types to keep you interested, Canada's silver dollar commemoratives might just be the series for you!

Yes thanks.

Very informative and potentially expensive. I used the list to figure out that I'm missing 9 of them.

...so now the hunt is on.

Just a clarification question on the 1971-1980 coins.

Are these considered to be Proof, Specimen or BU silver? Of course they are not frosted but does that mean they are not 'proof'?

I know there are nickel versions that I'm ignoring but I've seen the silvers referred to as proof or specimen but not BU.

It's probably splitting hairs but I'm curious what other collectors think.

You raise a good point CC-Ottawa, I guess I got a bit "lazy" and grouped all of the non-Proof coins into the "Brilliant" bucket based on the RCM's current coins. The Mint definitely labeled the 1971 through 1980 pieces as "Specimen" finish, so I should have labeled them as such.

It would be more accurate if I edited my notes above as follows:

Available Individually
  • Annual Standard Edition, Specimen: 10 (1971-1980) -- features 10 distinct design types

  • Annual Standard Edition, BU: 32 (1981-2012) -- 32 distinct design types

Hope this clears things up and that folks find the information helpful.

canuck1us, CC-Ottawa: Thank you for the positive feedback.

I like your list and the break out of size and design . If you want to collect all series, classic, loons, special loons, you can collect another 200 for fun.

Well, after counting my collection (and even taking my socks off the second time!) I still couldn't get the numbers to come out right. Then I realized a) I had the 1997 flying loon filed under loonies instead; and b) I only had 1 2003 Coronation (Voyageur) and your list includes 2! The second being the one from the set with the two dates on the back. Now I just gotta find me one of those.... :-)

@MrCanada: Thanks for thought -- I think I'm going to stick with just the silver and nickel dollars, however. Can't collect everything after all! (Though sometimes it seems I'm trying to!)

@kuh_85: Glad you got the numbers to work out! Hope you find the 2003 dollar you need soon! One note, I believe the 2003 coin you're looking for has the two dates on the obverse vs. on the reverse.
