So in my collection lies a 1922 shilling, which I would determine as Exf +. Hard to tell because it looks like its been buried underground for 90 years! But through the dirt I see a high grade with very nice toning. I took it to my local coin dealer who suggests it would only be worth a few bucks in that state which I tend to agree. He told me to try my luck and put it in silver dip as nothing worse can happen, I also tend to agree with that. Although I am going to put it in Cloudy Ammonia instead. I am sorry to those coin lovers I know I shouldn't be touching it but it can't get any worse. I will post pics before it goes in and after it comes out :D RESULTS: Not to happy, does look better but not as good as I expected. Does look better in hand then in photos, stoll toning on the obverse but seems to have done something to the toning on the reverse. Full centre diamond, can't really count the pearls. Still stuff covering the feathers on the emu so can't determine the feathers. BEFORE -   AFTER -   Edited by AaronG

The way you have described the appearance, it seems as if the coin could do with some help.
Awaiting the 'before' and 'after' pictures.
The only coins I have cleaned are ancients, that would otherwise would be unidentifiable. I currently have a late Roman bronze soaking in olive oil for six months.

It's all good, pics taken, didn't have time to put them on ccf, just went in to cloudy ammonia, hopefully this works. I tried it on some round 50's and it cleared all the grime

I think you may as well. It wont affect the lustre, just remove an organic grime.

you've gone this far, why not go all the way and give it a thorough clean and polish?

That stubborn rust looks like it will be the major problem. Other than that, the results have been somewhat effective.

The detail is coming through but the toning looks like its going to stick. unfortunate. Looks to be corroded not so much grimy so acetone/ammonia probably isn't going to ever work  |

To throw my 2 cents out there;
I think you've made the coin look better.
BUT
I don't think it would have graded EF+ even if it wasn't in need of your assistance. The details are not particular good. With the shillings I usually focus on the star and look for a real sharp one. This one looks flat. From that point alone, I would suggest that VF pre-cleaning woulda been all I'd have given it. (Trying to make you feel better about taking a cleaning agent to a coin!)
