How may of you break up proof and mint sets. Seems like the individual coins are are worth more loose in a lot of cases.

If you do break them up, do you just note on a flip where they came from?

Lots of collectors break up mint sets to fill in holes in denomination date sets. With Australian mint sets at least, it happens that some coins were issued in mint sets only, with one or more coins in the set not issued for general circulation.

It is one way of acquiring a truly uncirculated example, even for an issued for circulation date.

I usually break up mint sets if I want to put the coins to album. PVC and other soft plastic mints sets are not good for any type of coins because of verdigris and corrosion. But in hard plastic sets coins will preserve better than outside I think. I have seen some dark spots appeared to silver coins after release.

I break mine up now. They can really get ruined in those cases and packaging. I don't note where they came from, I just put them in their places as I go. If I were plan on selling them later then maybe I would keep them in their packaging, but I have no plan on selling them unless it is individual coins to replace one that may have been damaged or spotted from the OGP.

I have thought about buying extra sets of some of the lower minted sets to put away for later, but until the PM market settles down I don't see any but the pre 64 sets bringing more of a premium than they already do. Then again I did just buy the 2008 proof set and man did it cost a pretty penny.

Now my prestige, legacy, brown box Ikes, GSA Morgans, and premier silver proof sets remain in their packaging, but that's about it.

I have broken up and continue to break up my proof sets; the coins are put into the appropriate Dansco album.

I prefer to collect the business strikes from circulation, so I have not broken up many mint sets. I did break one for my 1973 Eisenhower dollars (which were only available in the mint set that year).
