I guess these are Indian dump coins but I can't find them in SCWC for 19th or 20th century. Maybe my eyes just tired on the sqiggles!

The left one is copper, 13.3mm in diameter, 3.4mm thick and weighs 3.40 grams

The right one may be billon, measures 12.9mm in diameter, 2.9mm thick and weighs 3.28 grams.

Anyone have any knowledge on these?

Thanks

They are Indian Bull and Horseman coins, issued under various rulers, both Hindu and Islamic.

Indian dump coins? What does that mean? I thought dump coins are what you dump at the bank that you don't want?

There's a glossary link on the left. It doesn't have everything but there's some good stuff there.

Quote:
Dump
Any coin which is unusually thick for it's size. Often applied to the native coinage of India, and to any small coin punched out of the centre of a larger one; the New South Wales "Dump" was punched out of the centre of a Spanish dollar.

Yep, they're "bull and horseman" jitals, and they're way older than any of the Krause catalogues. The one on the right is probably the older of the two, given that it's less stylized. Some of our Indian coin experts could probably date them better than me, but I'd guess 1000-1200 AD. They're probably made of billon (debased silver) rather than copper.

It is true that this is a bull and horseman type coin. On the side with the stylizedd recumbent bull, there is the legend in Nagari script reading Sree Samantadeva, parts of which are visible on both the coins. On the other side, there is a stylized horseman above which the name of the issuing ruler is often found in the later period issues. Unfortunately, that is not seen on these coins. This type of coinage lasted for about four centuries in the Northwestern area of India.
