This would be the hammered type.

No means to stress you, but I suspect it could be a modern replica . The glossy look of the coin, the way the bust and legend jump out and are shadowed by the toning and the toning itself looks more like black paint than normal toning.

I am in no way saying this is fake, just expressing my concern.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have no reason to believe that this is a fake as was found with 2 others in a field metal detecting, it has tarnished over the years I have had it. thought it was hammered but just wanted second opinion. thanks

If you give me the diameter and weight, I could probably give you the denomination and maybe a value.

Being in dirt is probably the reason for the weird toning. Just so you can be sure, stick a magnet to it, if it sticks, it's fake. If it doesn't, than you've probably removed all the things that makes me suspicious of it being a replica.

Nice metal detecting finds !

Elizabethan coins with better bust detail, such as this one has, are more valuable.

There's an easy way to distinguish between hammered and milled Elizabethan coins - the milled ones don't have an inner circle of beads (between the legend and the effigy).

Yes but I've seen a few fake coins and non of them ever sticked to the magnet.

This is a nice Liz I. I have a 1572 with the same grade obverse but the reverse of mine is well worn. I'm sending mine off to be certified this Spring.
