This isn't my coin, but I found it so interesting that I'm posting it here. To my eyes, it looks like the coin was first worn nearly smooth, then over time crystallization upset the coin's surface.

Silver-Crystallization--An-Extreme-Case

Btw--a dealer is selling this coin; any guesses what they want for it?

That is the oddest thing I've seen on a coin.

DV! I guess $229. Crystallization of a coin? Any ideas on how this could happen? Are you sure it isn't a reproduction?

Ancient silver coins can undergo crystallization--it's something you won't see in modern reproductions.
I found some good reading here and here.

Any way to remove the crystallization without damaging the coin?

Check out the photos on the pages I linked--the whole structure of the coin gets crystallized--it is irreversible.
Most coins aren't as severe as the one above, which I consider almost past being a coin--worth $80?

Doubtful. I wouldn't pay $80 for it, or even $40.

Me neither. These Corinth drachms aren't cheap, but this is almost a slug.
