Hi, I wonder what people think of this auction. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1828-German...em4163610bb8It is a coin I'm after but I'm not going to bid on this one... even though I can't really see anything wrong with it. Three reasons hold me back.. Private sales...not good. Only 25 feedback - we all start somewhere - but ..no thanks From the Phillipines .. might be ok - I don't really know - but it's a long way from home. Moved to World Coins forum - Sap

This doesn't sound good. I don't think he is experienced with coins. He is selling an Italian 5 lire coin as a Belgium 5 franc coin. Maybe he has recently been selling an inheritance.
The coin looks real, if it is a fake, it's an impressive one. Is the weight he posted right?

Hi, not really a comment on the coin but I was just curious as to why you thought a Private Listing was not good ? When I sell on ebay I always list in that way so bidders can have privacy, I didn't realise that there was some sort of problem with doing this and that it might infer some sort of wrong-doing. Cheers Brian

Hi Brian
Personally I never bid on a coin with "private listing" as you just can't tell what shill bidding is going on in the background.
It's probably a hangover from the "old days" when you could actually tell who was bidding and you could tell who was a real player and who wasn't. I can't seem to shake the nagging suspicion of why something is being covered up.

Personally I think you are being over paranoid about the coin Bacchus. 25 rating is not bad at all in my opinion. I have sold/ bought over 500 items on ebay and only have a rating of 48. Most people simply do not give ratings. Even if you got the coin and it was fake ebay will refund your money and probably let you keep the coin too (its happened to me once) Personally if I wanted that coin and the price was right I would pop on it. Worst that happens is you have to get a refund.

Quick question. Maybe one of you can help. I know nothing about foreign coins and absolutely nothing about this coin in particular. I was just wondering is the "o" and the "e" in Koenig supposed to be that close together? Sorry, it just looks odd to me! Edit: After looking at pics on Heritage, I see that it is supposed to look like that. Guess I should have looked there first!

There's nothing wrong with the grapheme OE (I tried to have them together but the forum code does not allow it), it's called a ligature. The coin is supposed to be like that. What makes me cautious about this piece is the fact that for very little wear it appears to be quite dirty. Of course, it could be improper storage, but it also could be imperfect production (read forgery) conditions.

Thanks for all the replies. As I said I really couldn't see anything wrong with it - but something nagged at the back of my mind that it looked odd. You're right, it may have been cleaned and/or photographed oddly and that is it.

Quote: I was just curious as to why you thought a Private Listing was not good ? With a PL, other viewers can't see who the top bidder is to warn them of a fake. Of course, in effect now all auctions are like that, since they no longer show ID of bidders.

This is another of these coins listed from "China" this time Apparently also 28g, I'm convinced the first coin was indeed a Chinese fake and I'm not being "overly paranoid". Sometimes it just pays to go with your gut instinct.

Guess I came in a little late on this one: Yes, it's indeed a counterfeit with such high probability that I simply wouldn't bother to bid on it. This type is known to be heavily counterfeited because it is the most popular of the series as part of which it was issued, most probably because of the many portraits on it.
And, by the way, the OE in KOENIG is written as one letter because it is supposed to be one letter. In German, the letters Ä Ã- and Ü (called Umlaut) can also be spelled AE OE and UE if the umlauts are not available or, in the case of these coins, for aesthetical and historical reasons.
