While going through my grandpas coin collection with him we found a 1961 penny that is silver in color and really have no clue as to what it could be. It's not magnetic like the 43' steel cents and has a completely different look than any steel cents that I have from 43'. And as far as I know that was the only year that Lincoln cents were a different color than copper. Any information would be great!

Welcome Raoulduke50! Could you post pictures of the coin.
This cent could just be the victim of a science class experiment where people would mix zinc, sodium hydroxide and 3M NaOH solution, making it silver in color. Or it could be just plated in silver. If it were a true silver penny, it would be a cent struck on the metal meant for a dime (back in '61 when dimes were silver), it would be the size of a dime.

If the coin looks exactly the same as a normal 1961 cent (except for the colour) and weighs the same as a 1961 cent, then yep, sounds like a plate job to me.

I'm going to have to wait a few days to get the weight for you guys but here are the best photos I have of the coin. also the rim of the coin is not the same width all the around the coin some spots its as thick as a penny, then in others it is thinner than a penny

Is that rust? What plating rusts? I have a 53 that looks plated though it has a very slight hint of yellow. Here it is compared to a normal cent and a plated 43.

Raoul, on the penny, the brown spots, are they on top of the silver or is it like the silver is scrapped off.

there are a couple possibilities here I guess. One would be its plated with some type of metal and another would be wrong planchet for the type. Weight should be able to give you an answer to either scenario. Have you checked to see if it was magnetic? if it is then you know its not silver but not sure what it could be plated with if that is what is determined to have happened

Looks like a chemical alteration to me.

Apollo, the brown spots are on top of the silver. And Bryan, it's not magnetic so I really don't know, I guess when I get my scales tomorrow I will be able to tell if it's been plated making it weigh more or if it is a different planchette.

There is a video I believe on YouTube that shows how to make silver & gold cents.

Hello. I found this forum while looking for an answer about a similar 1961 D penny. I have an ammunition reloading scale and my 1961 D weighs 46 grains which is slightly less than a Wheat penny and slightly more than a 1982 penny. It is also slightly thinner than both. Non magnetic.
