You know everyone says you don't dump where you eat and I always follow this rule. I have been off of work so I have too much time to kill. I have been picking up 40 rolls a day, rotating through the 3 banks that I have selected. Today I went to a bank that I have been doing well at and got *** Edited by Staff | The bad word filter is in place for a reason. Bypassing the filter and making the intended word obvious anyway is completely unacceptable. *** out by the teller! She pretty much made a scene about it! AHHH soooo mad ! She said that she didn't have that many and I said that's fine, what can you give me? She says I will only give you 10 rolls and that they were so low and that her business customers pay for the rolls and that they have to be able to give them rolls and then said I've seen you in here picking up coins, where do you take them. I told her to another branch because the tellers don't like having to dish them out and have to take them back and so on and so forth and she gave me that I don't bring them back to them so they don't have to order more.... I get it, but she was sooo loud and very rude! Meanwhile, there is a teller beside her that I had dealt with the week before and the manager. I asked them if it was ok that I pick up rolls here and they had no problem with it. I told the teller that I had inquired about all of this and that I have been just doing what the teller have told me and that I was trying to be very polite and respectful to everyone and she turns around and tells me well the manager is wrong and I'm going to tell her that. I'm so discouraged right now. I'm so uncomfortable to get coins there now, and there is another branch that the more I go in the more LOOKS I get. That's 2 out of my 3 pick up banks that I'm uncomfortable going to now, and 1 of my dump banks is giving me looks now too. I dunno what to do now. Is it the volume in which I am picking up that are sending off the bad vibes? Should I just start calling my banks ahead of time and get them to put a box together for me instead? Even 1 of my other dump banks I seem to have an issue with. I picked up rolls from them once and I got bad looks all around and so I went back 2 weeks later to dump instead and got looks of disapprovement again...its like I cant pick up or dump there either. So upset and frustrated. I've been doing so well and now I'm hitting a road block. Edited by samsnate 03/10/2012 12:02 pm

What's the bank's profit margin on your roll hunting? Do you think the job description for teller includes "repeatedly facilitate roll hunting for numismatists?" Yes, I know there are other ways to look at it, but place yourself in their positions. Compare it to someone who uses a sandwich shop's restroom 6 times a week, but only buys a Coke once a month, if that. There's not much in it for them and the frequency has begun to irritate them. The rudeness is still inappropriate, but if you walked in each of those 3 institutions and deposited $200K in each, I'm guessing you would get all the rolls you wanted without the looks. See where I'm going? In the absence of that, it's just part of roll hunting. At least you're not banned...yet.

Well the amount you are picking up seems OK, depending on what coin it is. But I think your just running into bad luck with these tellers. See if theres another bank you can use. Most tellers are always nice to me and I've been to a lot of banks.
About the dump where you eat thing-I eat and dump at TD Bank, and they send all the coins that are deposited in their coin counter to the Fed or something, they definetly don't re wrap them and then hand them out. because I always get a full box of nickels, and either way they don't accept customer wrapped rolls, they make you dump them in the coin counter. And to add, I have marked coins before and never got any back. Plus, I always get new stuff in my boxes, and I average .75 silver nickels per box.

I can see them being irritated, because 40 rolls a day is 80% of a box. That's just over 1.5 boxes per bank, per week. That wouldn't be a lot if they were ordering them specifically for you, but since you are going in there unannounced, I'm sure that is cutting into their boxes specifically ordered for their business customers. You should try ordering boxes instead. That way they are better prepared.
Also, if you have one dump bank (I'm pretty sure you have more than one) they are getting 4.5 boxes in just pennies a week from you. Is it a coin counting machine that you use as your dump, or do they need to count them? If they need to count them, I can see them getting tired of needing to do that each week.
(Sorry if you answered any of my questions in your last post, I'm being distracted and trying to multitask.)

I see what you are saying OneBowl. @NYBRIAN They give them to me rolled in groups of 10 and I dump with them rolled and grouped in 10. No counting machines.

I think OneBowl is a bank teller 'cause this stuff always gets him kinda touchy. ;)
I recently lost my pick-up bank 'cause some dude was abusing the privilege of ordering coins. I'm just extra friendly with 'em and they ordered for me again if that says anything.
I also work with a dude who's wife works at a bank so I'm thinking of banking where she works to get a hook-up if possible. Just be patient, especially at dump banks. My philosophy is "Who cares what the tellers think, anyway."

sorry if I missed it, but what denomination of coins are you doing?
I have been banned by 1 branch! I would pickup $10 in cents every 1 week from this branch. After about a year the manager cut me off. Luckily I live in a populated area where it does not effect me. But its kinda funny because this bank advertises that they will pay you $125 if you switch to their bank. Well I am already a customer, and this manager wont give me $10 in cents every 1 week. And usually they are CWR...

I do 3 boxes total a week. And I have about 6 banks that I pick up coins from. I rotate so I see banks only once a week or once every two weeks. I do this not to irritate anyone. Over a year later it has been all smiles and they recognize me when I come in. By the way, none of these branches are really small so it doesn't seem like a big deal to them.
If I were you, I would find more banks to rotate through if your banks are getting annoyed, or I would ask if they could order boxes for you in advance, that way you won't be taking coin from their paying business customers. You definitely want to keep in good relations with your banks.

Sam, dimes can be dicey with tellers. Have you told them what you do? And, not like I'm recommending you to bribe them per se, but have you thought of a couple of Timmies cards strategically handed out once a month? Not jammed with cash or anything, but 5-10 bucks on them? That would go a long way to grease the squeaky wheel...just a thought. It works for me. Where do you live in Canada?

Dumped coin is sent to a local facility, or mother bank, to be re-rolled. You can consider them the be the "Fed", if you wish.

See if you can order boxes ahead of time. I found a bank that is willing to do just that. I had to open an account and they charge me for the box through the account. They have a coin counter and are willing to take the coins back after I look through them.
The tellers will save me coins that they think I may want as well. I always buy what they save, even if I already have them. You never know what you may get.
Took some donuts in to the branch a month ago. Told they it was teller appreciation day. They were so pleased.

I have been aways very honest with the tellers and smile and very polite with please and thank you's,and I AM going to be bringing in treats for them. Its only been a couple weeks since I started so even though they see me, they dont all know who I am yet. I wanted to start the treat thing next week. I live in central ontaio. And I have 6 banks. 3 to pick up and 3 to dump. That is every branch in the city.

I have brought tellers treats for a couple years. The consistant silver that I was getting in $2,000 worth of customer dimes every month dried up shortly after that. Had to switch back to boxes. I don't find any 90% halves from those banks anymore either, maybe it's just coincedence. I still bring treats now and then.

I think I will bring them some treats and a few boxes of dimes as a peace offering and maybe hang low from them for a week or 2 before going back to order again, that way the coins I bring back can be shipped out and circulated. I guess that bank I will just order a box a head of time or see about them putiing one together over a weeks time and get them to call me when they have them in...maybe thats the best way.

So I brought in a box of quarters to the teller that was really rude to me last week. The head teller was there that told me it was ok in the first place and she smiled at me and said, yer back again huh...I smiled back and said yep, today I'm replenishing your stock and she smiled and went along her way. The rude teller actually took the box and acked me if I was depositing or if I would like to switch for a different box. Huh.... maybe this is just the way to avoid problems. The head teller obviously doesn't mind me and the other teller seems to just be worried about her stock so I think I can win win with this one...I get what I want and they get what they want. might hang low for a week and then go back and start fresh with them, getting them to put together a box for me when CWRs come in or when an older person comes in dropping of change, and get them to call me and I will let them know that I will bring them back. Got skunked on 80 rolls today! Box of brinks ( which I didnt have high hopes for anyways) and a box of CWRs but the box had a big X on the side so I didnt have high hopes for that I either. In both cases they were the only boxes available....so tried anyways.
