Ive been working lately on my 1964 - 1970 Kennedy proof/SMS set. I also decided to fill the rest of the album with 1992 - present silver proofs.

Its in a "Library of Coins" Half Dollar book. They are very nice albums, I came across it at a coin show for 5 bucks.

Wanted to share my toned 69. I love it but my dad hates it. He took the pics and labeled it Kennedy "defective" lol

I like the observe, it reminds me of a Franklin I have. The square untoned area on the revers is a draw back to me.

Muddler, you are probably in the majority. It's odd.

Interesting though, it was part of a collection which was purchased by a local shop. There were a bunch of others with the exact same toning pattern, including a bust half and seated half.

Wonder where these guys have been for the last ? years.

Not bad. I like the obverse toning as well.

I supposed that there was a piece of tape or something else on the reverse preventing it from toning with the rest of the coin.

Thanks jbuck. I think you are spot on. Double sided tape of some sort, an album filled with sulfer and most likely a warm attic or something.

Petersun, I'm sorry if I sounded rude. I'm not sure if you were asking to buy the coin or if you were just askin the value. As far as value, I don't think it's worth too much. Maybe a few bucks above or below an untoned half of similar grade, depending on the buyers personal taste.

I do think it has nice cameo under all that tone, just kind of hard to tell to what extent.

Double sided tape of some sort
When I first started collecting I used folders. The Whitman folders were fine, but the one "various stock" folder I had was very loose, so I had some of the coins held in with double sided tape.

Hey, I was only ten, please forgive me!

jbuck, do you think thats a possible reason for this toning? interesting to hear your comments as I didnt know what type of folders etc would need some sort of adhesive.

Something was stuck tight up against the coin, so air wouldn't get to it, so it was probably tape.

The blue Whitman folders have a tendency to let coins fall out. The holders, like the Dansco, won't let that happen, since there is clear plastic on either side to hold them in place.

Because the square is so clean, I would guess it was double sticky sided foam or rubber (like that used to attach some auto emblems). Just tape probably would not have contoured so well to the coin. Anyway, the brown toning could also some from wood, cedar for instance. I have some silver that was left on a shelf in a cedar chest that has similar toning (without the square), The face that was against the wood has solid tone and the other face looks like this coin's obverse. Maybe sulfur is a major component in the smell of cedar.

The toning may have been from the folder material, but it is possibly the result of the environment they were stored in. Actually, maybe a combination of the two.

Albums offer slightly more environmental protection, but not much. They are not air-tight, but offer a more restrictive air flow.
