For some reason I was always attracted to this issue, even though I don't buy that many NCLT items. I was waiting until I could get one at a good price and this puppy came along as a "Buy-It-Now" at a price that fit my budget!

I like (and own) this one too but unfortunately, it's currently selling at about 50-60% of issue price. You were definitely wise to wait to buy it. Me? Not so much

I got both the matte finish and the regular finish sets of this 1998 offering from the RCM. Pictured is the regular finish. I really like this set, in no small part because they used the classic designs.

One of my favorite recent Canadian NCLTs is definitely the 2009 silver $5 proof coin commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the 1929 opening of Canada's first diplomatic office in Asia in Tokyo, Japan. The office formalized the growing friendly relationship between the two countries. As a fan of allegory on coins, I really enjoy the use of local flora and fauna to represent each country -- a white-tailed deer and maple tree for Canada, and a shika deer and cherry blossom tree for Japan. The two deer stand side-by-side, to symbolize the friendly, harmonious relations between the two countries. The coin is 36mm in diameter and is 0.925 fine silver in composition. It was only available to RCM Masters Club members in 2009 (at $47.95); I was unaware of the coin until last year. When I learned of the coin, I immediately went looking for one and was able to purchase one for just a few dollars over its original selling price. 5,000 individually-packaged coins were available in Canada, with another 35,000 placed in a special edition Japanese proof set sold in Japan. The coin has recently been selling for between $65 and $75 on ebay. 2009 80th Anniversary of Canada in Japan - Reverse

Don`t fret so much CC-Ottawa.I think a lot of us Just can`t wait to get hold of THAT CERTAIN NCLT coin. It`s all in the game:Do I get it now at an inflated price from the mint. Wait a while and hope the coin doesn't sell out and then try and get it at a good or even fair price. Will it be one of those ``well sought after``coins. The only really good example I can give is my personal recent experience. The Titanic $10.00 silver NCLT coin. I wanted it badly and waited almost too long.Shortly after ordering it,it sold out or was almost sold out at the mint.(I`m not sure which almost or sold out)I received it in the mail ,opened the package and was glad I did get the coin.So the price was a little high.I love it. So don`t kick yourself or feel bad CC-O

Quote: 2009 silver $5 proof coin Thanks commems. That is a very nice coin and one I had forgotten about. I did not know that 35,000 of them were sent offshore but did note that it is one of the few mint recent issues of this type that doesn't have a COA number. Nice to know that there were only 5000 domestic issues.

One of my favorites. The Canada 2007 $8 Chinese Square-Cut Hole Proof. I liked it so much, I ended up winning eight of them in various auctions.

Another interesting set. It took me years to finally assemble all four. Canada 2008 $15 Queen of Spades Playing Card Proof was the first release.

@traevin that 2007 square cut is great. Seems pretty affordable on ebay too.

ztt2,
I bought all of mine around the first of this year. Final cost: $224. Of course, I didn't get the large case, although all mine were cased and sold with COAs. It will be interesting to see if the seller gets any offers. It's too much, IMO; but I think that's right around what they sold for in 2008-2009. Other than maybe the queen, I don't think the silver playing cards were a big hit.

This is another of my recent RCM NCLT favorites, the 2010 Limited Edition Poppy Silver Dollar with red enamel added to the large poppy in the foreground. I'm not usually a fan of "enhanced" coins, but I think this one was tastefully done and emphasizes the symbolic meaning behind the single poppy -- the coin was issued to mark the 2010 passing of Canada's last WWI veteran. It was a Limited Edition of 5,000 and originally sold for $139.95. It currently sells for about 40 to 50% over its original price. 2010 Poppy Silver Dollar - Reverse

Although I don't collect Canadian dollars, that's a beautiful coin. Very simple, elegant design.
