Hello! Please help me identify this coin I found, it's in a rather good( I think ) condition, I just want to know: 1. What kind of coin it is. 2. Whether it's real or fake. 3. How much it's worth, if it's real. The front is a picture of a human with the words: ·DEI·GRATIA·1801·CAROLUS·IIII· The reverse is a picture of a shield(?) with a crown on top of it and 2 poles(?) beside it and the words: ·HISPAN·ET IND·REX·(It's a "o"/0 on top of a "M")·8R·F·M· The diameter is around 4cm. For some reason I can't upload an image, I'll keep trying.

You are describing an 8 reale from the mexico City mint. But, a picture is necessary to confirm its authenticity. Can you weigh the coin also?

The lettering looks off to me as do the denticles. I am in no way an expert at this series. If you are patient there are several members here who will chime in soon. They will be able to answer all your questions. WELCOME to CCF!

I believe it is a cast counterfeit- there are many raised dots in the detaile, the denticles are not good, the details look too good in places, and missing in others. The weight should be 13.5357 grams.

I think this is a counterfeit. The design seems flat and lacks detail. Check the hair on the obverse and the crown on the reverse and the lettering. I also don't like the look of the wear on this coin. High details on the margins and spots of wear on the center. Weird - and potentially hiding problems with the design elements. You can search the web for images of this coin and compare. Here's one from ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MEXICO-8-RE...t_5629wt_670

Thanks for the identification, after looking and comparing, I agree that it's fake. Well, looks like I can't have high hopes for things I found in a dried drain!
