Just noticed that platinum has finally caught back up with gold -- both are currently at $1700/ounce. No idea if this is temporary or not or even what it means in the grand scheme of things. Just thought I'd point it out, though...

And now platinum is actually higher than gold for the first time in many a month...
Rest in Peace

For every contract of gold you sold and bought one of platinum when gold was $100 higher, you'd have made $10,000.

Still weary of how long this will last though. It seems to me that the rise in Pt is more due to the strike in one of its major mines about a month ago finally translating into less available Pt. The European auto industry certainly has not picked up demand for Pt. The recent dip in gold prices also means that it's not so much that Pt's catching up to gold but more of a meet in the middle.

It was only a matter of time, folks. Pt is almost always higher in price than Au, so a return to this normal price spread was expected.

The shares of the PPLT physical platinum ETF that I bought are looking a lot better to me these days than when they dropped from the $158 price I bought them at to around $140! I figured that was temporary but it was a sickening price plunge at the time.

I see where they are still having labor problems with the miners in South Africa. That's probably not helping Pt production very much. :-/

Looks like platinum is below gold again. Did the strike in South Africa end or something?

Not that I have heard, Barry, but then I am not following that story all that closely. My interest in Pt isn't all that large and it is a 3-5 year holding, so I am just going with the flow for the next few years. If it does well that will be great. If not, then it will not break the bank. It it does well, maybe we'll take that trip to Ireland that my wife and I discussed a few years ago. That would be nice.
