My husband is going to kill me! I was goofing around yesterday at lunch and saw a 1797 cent. I have always wanted one. I thought I would put in a "stupid bid", you know, to get in on the action. It was terribly scrubbed but the details were there, so I thought, for $9.00 what could I lose? Well, a misplaced decimal point hosed me. Yup, I am now the proud owner of a $90.00 scrubbed 1797 cent.

How on earth am I going to break the news to him?

I will post pictures when I get it - MAYBE in hand it does not look as bad?

If you haven't paid yet, I think the $81.00 difference is worth an unpaid strike against me as you can get a couple of those without getting in trouble. Ask the seller to let you off the hook and explain you hit an extra key and if they don't forgive you, just don't pay.

I assume you bought it on ebay, I can't find a completed listing where one comes out with a $90.00 bid?
Can you post your purchase link or image?

It was not ebay but Proxibid. I have sent an e-mail to the company that held the auction and am crossing my fingers. Once the auction is over, then listing goes away.

good luck with that, I believe the rules for bidding are quite clear when you register. eat the $81 loss as an inexpensive education in goofing around.

The invoice has not posted yet - I am not sure how to look up closed auctions on Proxibid so I will post images as soon as the invoice posts (unless I get lucky and they take pity on me!).

If your $90 bid got accepted, that means someone else bid $85. Clearly it was worth that much to someone. Convince yourself that someone is you

Now wrap it up and give it to your hubby. Pretend to be all excited about his new gift that you got him, and tell him what a great deal it was!

SJUHawks - I like the way you think! Will do that - and post the pictures in a new thread.

What grade is the coin? Can you see any details on it?

Are you saying scrubbed, because it is so worn, the details are missing (scrubbed off) or are there scratches all over it? Better off to use the term worn and not scrubbed, if it is just worn.

In the NN issue of 3-6-12, on page 38, it lists the cheapest 1797 in AG-3 as $75, so it can't be that far off the price, unless the grade is lower?

I'll post the pictures here as well (I had put them in the grading side for opinions):
