Good question 2Bits...I was wondering this also...found a pretty good explanation for this. I googled "this 1952 nickel is rusting"...what Came up was .."20th century chrome" and gives a good discription of why your coin is in the state it's in. Hope this helps. By the way...good pics

Well I think I'm still a little confused. It seems that the rim and the edges tend to rust because they coated the sheet of steel before they punched out the coin. But still not sure about the rust on the field of the coin. The process in the 50's doesn't seem to have been the best so perhaps this is just wear and the coating flaking away?

If it has a slightly bluish tint it is chrome-plated.
Wherever the chrome has been worn off a little, it can rust. Any scratch will show black rust, and often the chrome flakes off, and then you get black bubbles.
Yours are definitely chrome-plated; if they weren't, then the whole surface would be the same colour.

I have several rolls of 1944, 1945, 1950, 1951 and 1952 chrome plated coins. The chrome plating is not that great, and tends to flake off in circulation. The unprotected areas tend to develop rust.
To me, this looks like a typical well circulated 1952, with flaking and a bit of rust.

Hi everyone, Please have a look at my 1952 nickel and let me know if it's missing chrome. I googled it but I did not find a good example. Thanks Rookie62

Looks liks a regular chrome that circulated. Put it next to a nickel 5 cents and that's the color it should have. No blue. Also if you look at many it'll help develop your eye, and keep in mind it can have partial chrome.
