Wouldnt the chemicals attack both the inner core & outer core the same?

Curious why its only on the middle core?

because core and ring are made of different metals.

it is quite hard to attack the ring - it is made of pure nickel

No, it is made of two different metals. The outer ring is nickel while the core is aluminum-bronze. Bronze is susceptible to corrosion and that is what you have there. It is not rust since there is no iron or steel involved.

A quick correction.

I always thought the core was aluminum-bronze (according to the Mint specs) but it is not! After XRF I learned it is just normal brass.
