My step father found this coin on a Virginia Plantation. He thinks it is gold and had it weighed and said it was one troy ounce. I am skeptical but thought I would ask the experts.

Thanks

to CCF. It doesn't look like gold or a coin to me. Lets wait for more input. Looks like some sort of hall marks on it.

There is zero chance that it is gold, it shows signs of old corrosion from being buried but gold does not corrode. Due to the odd shape, I seriously doubt if it is numismatic-related at all but I really have no clue otherwise. Best guess is that it is a bronze/brass base of something, there is a hole along with a brighter circular area on the smooth side- an indicator that something else was attached to it. The bottom has some interesting markings that may be maker's marks. It might be the base of an old candle holder but that is just a guess.

If it weighs exactly an ounce, maybe it's a weight of some kind. Strange if so; a weight usually has the mass indicated on it somewhere.

At first glance, I wondered if it was a balance weight too. It suspect this was a part of a set of weights that nested within each other, such as below. The "dagger" and "ewer" marks are described here as British verification marks.
